Obituary

William A, Merrill, 87, of Liza Harmon Drive in Westbrook, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2014. Bill was born in Westerly, RI the son of Arthur and Mary (Fitzmorris) Merrill.  Following his graduation from Gorham High School he entered the US Army, and was stationed overseas. After he got out of the service, he attended the University Of Maine graduating with a 2 year degree in Agriculture.  He later worked for American Can, LC Andrews, Lachance Brick Co, and Portland Air Freight before retiring. Bill was proud of his military service and a member of the VFW.  He enjoyed spending time at the Andrew's farm in Gorham, was an avid sports fan, especially enjoying Nascar and the Red Sox.  He enjoyed reading, keeping track of the weather, and was a great story teller.  Another attribute he had was being able to give route information to any one in need of directions. Bill was predeceased by his wife Anna (Burnell) Merrill in 1996. He is survived by a son David Merrill and wife Susan of West Baldwin; daughters Elizabeth Meserve and husband Clayton of Saco, and Sarah Plourd and her companion Ray of Pembroke, NH; his brothers George Merrill and Arthur E. Merrill Jr and his wife Barbara, both of Westbrook; grandchildren Meagan and Jakeb Plourd, and Marlena Merrill; a great grandchild Gabreela Jean Jackson, and one more on the way; as well as several nieces, nephews, and many friends. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at the VNA Home Health and Hospice for their care and support.   A visiting hour will be held from 1 to 2 PM Friday at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook followed by a memorial service at 2 PM.
