Obituary

Gorham—William Richard Charlton Jr., 68 of Gorham died unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at Maine Medical Center. William was born in Portland on January 23, 1948 the son of the late William R. Charlton and Lillian C. (Savage) Charlton. He graduated from Gorham High School in the class of 1966. After graduating he served in the United States Army and fought in Vietnam during the TET Offensive. During the war, William was wounded twice and received 2 purple hearts and a bronze medal for valor under fire. He worked for the Coca Cola Company for 25 years then after with Hyland HVAC Services and retired from Hale Trailer. In 1995 William lost his oldest son, Jeffrey Charlton to Hodgkin's disease. William will be sadly missed by his wife of 46 years, Carmen M. Charlton, son, Brian M. Charlton and Erica, grandchildren, Alex, Zach, Lane, Masyn, his brother Robert Charlton and wife Debra, niece Linsey, in-laws Nancy, Dana and Billy Richardson, Michael, Deb, Matt and Chris Paterson, Frank, Robin, and Danny Cope, Pamela, Amanda, and Nick Cash, Redlon, Joanne, Patrick, Lynn Anne, Shannon, and Mason Cope. In addition to his parents and son he is also predeceased by his mother and father-in-law, Redlon and Joyce Cope. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the West Gorham Union Church, Rte. 25, Gorham. Spring burial will be private. Memorial donations in William's memory may be sent to Animal Refuge League, PO Box 336, Westbrook, Maine 04092.
