Warren Nelson was born in Westbrook, Maine April 12, 1921 to Amelia Sorenson Nelson and Hans H. Nelson and passed away at Springbrook Center in Westbrook June 24, 2015 at the age of 94. Warren was educated in the Westbrook School System, graduating from WHS in 1939. He worked at S.D. Warren Paper Mill for forty years. He served in the US Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater with the 41st Engineer Division, traveling to Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines and as part of the Occupation Forces in Japan. Following the War, he married his high school sweetheart Mildred I. Staby in Blair, Nebraska April 23, 1946. The marriage was blessed with two daughters Karen and Lynn. The family enjoyed travelling. Warren always made sure they visited Millie's family in Iowa, Nebraska and Colorado at least once a year. Other trips were also included in the yearly itinerary such as Niagara Falls, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. and every fall to New Hampshire to the White Mountains. After the girls were grown, Warren and Millie visited Karen and husband Richard in Italy. They also made two trips to Denmark. In the States they spent time in Florida and Nebraska. After 46 years of marriage, Millie passed away in 1992. Warren still made trips to Nebraska for grandchildren's special events. A lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Westbrook, Warren served in many capacities including choir member, several offices on the church council, and in later years, even custodian, a position he particularly enjoyed, as Warren loved to clean! Millie was Trinity's organist for many years. Warren usually spent Saturday evening opening the shutters on the pipe organ. He was a member of the American Legion in his retirement years. After Millie's death, Warren enjoyed church events, dinners out and quiet walks during seventeen years with his special friend Irma Magnuson until her passing. Warren loved sports and was very willing to lace up his hockey skates and take the girls skating. Skiing was another favorite. There were many occasions when Warren would take Lynn skiing after school, ski for several hours then go in for the midnight shift at S.D. Warren. He skied into his seventies, hitting the slopes with Lynn and her family. He was a very good swimmer, and using Daddy's shoulders as a diving platform was great fun for the girls. Fishing and camping were also on the list. Warren supported his children and grandchildren by following their band concerts, dance recitals, hockey games and any sport one of the kids happened to be playing at any time in Maine or Nebraska. He also followed the Boston Red Sox, laughing "they'll find a way to lose this one, too!" He could often be seen wearing Nebraska Cornhusker gear. Warren loved his Lord and spent time each day in devotions. He had many hymns committed to memory. Growing up in a Danish home, he was fluent in Danish and knew many hymns and prayers in Danish. He also memorized several of Longfellow's poems. Warren is preceded in death by his wife Millie, his parents, two sisters and their husbands Magna Carlson (Larry), Sylvia Nelson (Kenny), and his special friend Irma Magnuson. He is survived by daughters Karen Nelson Hansen of Omaha and Lynn Nelson McClure and husband Ronald "Kip" McClure of Belgrade Lakes Maine.
