Standish- Waltraud "Dixie" Damon, 94, passed away in Westbrook on Wednesday, October 17, 2018. She was born in Berlin Germany on April 26, 1924 and at the age of 4 came to America to live for four years. During this time, she learned to speak English. This served her well because during WWII, she served as a nurse with the Red Cross, and worked as a translator for the American Government. While working for the American Government, she met an American Solider from Maine by the name of Ralph Damon. The two fell in love and were married in Germany on April 19, 1948. They returned to the United States as husband and wife and settled first in Buxton and then built a house in Standish to raise their family. As a child growing up in Germany, she fondly remembered painting with her father who was an artist. She worked at Sylvania in Standish. She loved books, enjoyed gardening, classical music, and loved Christmas. She was an active member of the Buxton United Methodist Church in Chicopee. She served as the church's secretary, in the United Methodist Women's Group, the Administrative Council, taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and served as a lay leader. She was predeceased by her husband Ralph in 1999, and her sister Karin Lang. She is survived by her children Allan Damon, and his wife Carol of Buxton, Lisa Black, and her husband Peter of Standish, Patricia Betty, and her husband Paul of Standish, and Karin Boynton, and her husband Robert of Standish. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Christina Damon, Jason Davis, Shawn White, Joshua White, Michelle Jenkins, Tanieccia Rubenstien, Zackery Betty Neagle, Tamara Van Dine, Caitlyn Boynton, and Matthew Boynton, several great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Sunday, October 21, 2018 from 2-4 PM at the Gorham Chapel of Dolby, Blais & Segee 76 State St. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 22, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Buxton United Methodist Church, 276 Chicopee Rd. Buxton, Rev. Lynn Briggs, Officiating. Interment will follow the service at Dow's Corner Cemetery in Standish. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dixie's memory to the Buxton United Methodist Church.
