Walter D. Young, 77, of Puritan Dr., Westbrook, passed away Friday, Sept. 18, 2015 at his home. He was born in Westbrook, the son of Ralph and Alice (Shaw) Young, and graduated from Westbrook High School in 1956. Walter served his country in the Air Force from 1956 to 1960. He was employed at a Biddeford Shoe Shop for a short time and later at S.D. Warren, where he worked for 35 years before retiring. Walter also served as a member of Engine 3 Fire Department in Westbrook. He belonged to the Westbrook and Scarborough Senior Citizens, American Legion Post 62, the Elks Club, and was a member and served on the Board of Trustees at the Westbrook Warren Congregational Church. Walter enjoyed his gardens and screen house every summer. He enjoyed going to his granddaughters' sporting events, and traveling in and out of the country. He was predeceased by his parents; a daughter Mary Ellen Black in 1994; and sisters Rae Alley, Shirley Donahue, and Charlotte Ramsdel. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth "Betty" Young of Westbrook; daughters Sally and husband Phil Steinhagen of South Portland, and Jean and husband Donald Libby of New Gloucester; granddaughters Nicole and Abbey Steinhagen and Samantha Libby; brothers Robert and wife Dorothy Young of Dover-Foxcroft, Edward and wife Diana Young of Windham, Philip and wife Heidi Young of Hallowell. Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 8 PM Tuesday at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Wednesday at the Westbrook Warren Congregational Church. Interment will be at a later date. On line condolences may be expressed at blaisandhayfuneralhome.com.
