Obituary

Portland-      Virginia (Ginna) B. Gray Chretien, 82, passed away peacefully on Thursday  April 7, 2016 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.      She was born on March 18, 1934 in Portland, Maine, the daughter of Sherman and Berta (Chase) Gray.        Virginia attended Portland Schools graduating from Deering High School in l953 and later from Tufts University in Boston, MA.       She began her early teaching career in l958 at the Hebrew Day School and South Portland Schools in l959.  From l960 -1970 she lived in Boston with her sister, Shirley where she worked for a publishing company.       In 1970 she returned to teaching joining Portland Public Schools and retired in l985 from Longfellow School where she served as a special education teacher.       She met Guy Chretien through a mutual friend, and they were married on September 11, 1987 residing in Standish, ME until his death.  Both Virginia and Guy enjoyed canoeing, camping and hiking.       Her interest in the family history and genealogy revealed that she was a bloodline descent in the 12th generation from George Soule so she became a member of the Mayflower Society.        She joined Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in l973 and was an active member of the Maine Eta Masters Chapter at the time of her death.       Virginia had two passions, the joy of traveling, and the love of her cats over the years.  She traveled throughout the United States, Canada, England, Hawaii and Alaska.        Virginia was predeceased by her husband, Guy of 20 years, her parents, younger sister, Shirley and brothers, Sherman, Jr. and John Gray.       She is survived by a sister-in-law, Jean Dodge Gray and nieces Deborah, John, Jr William Gray.              A visitation will be held on Friday, April 22, 2016 from 10 to 11AM at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St. Westbrook, where a funeral will follow at 11:00 AM.
