Velma "Val" (Tingley) Nute Schurman, 95 Portland – Velma "Val" (Tingley) Nute Schurman, 95, died on February 22, 2016, at the Barron Center in Portland. She was born in Portland, on September 16, 1920, the daughter of Walter S. and Lillian D. (Donsmith) Tingley. Val grew up and attended schools in Scarborough and Portland. At age 6, from her front yard, Val watched the flight of Charles Lindbergh as he flew over her home.. In 1936, she married her first husband, Everett I. Nute. Together they owned a food concession and traveled to local carnivals and state fairs. During WWII, Val worked at E.T. Burrough Corp. and at the Todd Bath Shipyard, welding ammunition boxes. She had moved about the country during the war, but finally returned to Portland after the war ended. In 1954, Val was married for a second time, to Harlan W. Schurman. She owned and operated Val's luncheon on Forest Ave. for several years. She also held many jobs throughout her life including working at Burnham & Morrill, W.T. Grant's store, managed the Sears Coffee House, was a bookkeeper for RCA and also for the Westbrook Animal League, finally retiring from there in 2000, at the age of 80. She was very involved in Maine Politics and the Women's movement, participating in many organizations, including, but not limited to; The Maine Women's Lobby, League of Women Voters, Maine Federation of Business and Professional Women, Portland Lodge of Elks #188, and the American Red Cross. In 1996 Val was appointed by then Gov. Joe Brennan to the Maine State Council and served 2 terms for Displaced Homemakers. Val was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Buxton Caring Co-Op. She enjoyed bowling, golf, dancing, animals, entertaining, cooking, family picnics and reunions. Val also visited every state with the exception of Texas and Hawaii. She spent many summers relaxing and entertaining at her camp on Brandy Pond in Naples with grandchildren, family and friends. In addition to her parents, Val is predeceased by both of her husbands; two sons, Robert Walter Nute, and Sgt. Mjr. Ret. Everett I. "Bud" Nute; two grandsons, Gregory M. Sanborn, and Robert Brian Nute; and niece, Gloria Lerman. She leaves behind two children, Sidney L. Nute and wife Nancy of N. Franklin, CT, and Florence A. Sanborn and husband Carl of Standish; daughter-in-law, Evelyn Nute of Casco; 9 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren, one great, great, great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, February 27, at the Living Stone Community Church, 711 Ossipee Trail, Standish. Burial will be in Forest City Cemetery, South Portland, in the Spring. Memorial donations may be made in her honor to the Westbrook Animal Refuge League, PO Box 336, Westbrook, ME 04098
