Velma L. Greenlaw, 89, passed away Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012 at the South Portland Nursing Home. She was born in Westbrook, the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Pillsbury) Dyer. Velma graduated from Westbrook High School and went on to attend Northeastern Business College. From 1941 to 1944 she worked for the Portland Pipe Line, followed by 20 years of employment with the Episcopal Diocese of Maine. She also held secretarial positions for local attorneys and for Dr. Judd Smith. Velma was a member of the Rainbow Girls. She and her husband Ernest enjoyed traveling to many different locations, including northern Maine for fishing trips. Her joy of traveling continued throughout the years with bus trips with senior citizens. She also enjoyed keeping up with her classmates and would often meet on a monthly basis. Family was very important to Velma; she enjoyed family gatherings and met frequently with her cousins. She was predeceased by a grandson Michael Terwilliger, a sister Ellen Wilson, and two brothers, Maurice and William Dyer.. Velma is survived by her husband of 69 years, Ernest Greenlaw of South Portland; her daughters Joann Greenlaw of Scarborough and Anne Terwilliger of Hudson, NY; granddaughters Heather Weaver and Karen Case; great grandchildren Jadya, Gabriel, Kameron, and Michael; a brother Kenneth Dyer of Rohrersville, MD; her sister-in-law Thelma Greenlaw, whom she has been close friends with for many years; and several nieces and nephews. A visiting hour will be held from 10 to 11 AM Friday followed by a funeral service at 11 AM at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook. Interment will be in Smith Cemetery, Windham.
