Obituary

SCARBOROUGH – Thomas "Tom" Francis Joyce Jr., passed away on Monday, September 18, 2017, at the Maine Veteran's Home, in Scarborough. Tom was born on January 28, 1925, in Portland, to Olive "Isles" and Thomas F. Joyce Sr. Tom was a graduate of Deering High School in 1943. Tom was a World War II veteran who left high school in April 1943, prior to his graduation, to serve in the military. Tom never formally graduated from High School. He finally received his Deering High School diploma on August 28, 2016 during a small family outing. Missing his high school graduation was one of Tom's greatest regrets, but never regretted serving in World War II. Tom served with 8th Army Air Corps, 94th Bombardment Group and 410th Bombardment Squadron. Tom fought in the European Theatre during the last part of World War II. Before his service in World War II and while attending high school, Tom worked on the Liberty Ships in South Portland Tom worked for 44 years at S.D. Warren in Westbrook as a cutter press operator. Tom was an avid Boston Red Sox, Portland Sea Dogs and New England Patriots fan. During his retirement, Tom loved to travel, whether it was to Pennsylvania, Las Vegas, Florida or Atlantic City. He enjoyed spending time with his family and attending various dance recitals and sporting events involving his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Tom is pre-deceased by his wife, Sylvia "Sue" Joyce. He is also predeceased by his parents and a sister, Ms. Lillian White. Surviving are his daughter, Jill Joyce Potvin of Windham, step-daughter Judy Quimby and husband James Quimby of Windham, his sons, Kevin Joyce and his wife Penny of Standish, Jeff Joyce and his wife Theresa of Gorham, Kerry Joyce and his wife Cindy of Windham, Thomas M. Joyce of Kennebunk, Richard Joyce and his wife Laura of Topsham; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren. Tom was a dedicated husband; father, grandfather and great- grandfather and he surely will be missed. The Joyce family would like to thank all of the staff at the VA Home in Scarborough for the care that they provided our father during his stay. Visiting hours Saturday, September 23, 2017 from 9:00am – 11:00am at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham. Memorial service to follow at 11:00am at the chapel with burial at Calvary Cemetery, 1461 Broadway, South Portland. Those who wish to remember Thomas F.
