Obituary

Standish - Stewart Frederick Hartford, 83, passed away on October 31, 2018, at The Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 7, 1935 to Clarence and Josephine Hartford. Stewart graduated from Scarborough High School class of 1953. He went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He met the love of his life Hazel Brown in Washington D.C. and returned home to Maine. They were married on August 25, 1956, and celebrated 62 years of marriage this year. Stewart worked as a bus driver for Portland Coach Lines and Greyhound Bus Lines for over 30 years. After retirement, he enjoyed monthly breakfasts at Cole Farms with retired bus drivers. Stewart and Hazel regularly attended St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Portland and he was a lifetime member of The Order of the Eastern Star and Presumpscot Lodge No. 70 AF & AM of Windham. He loved traveling with Hazel and family in their motorhome, and eventually became a "snow bird" spending every winter in Lake Wales, Florida with Hazel. They enjoyed close friends including Zeb and Lynn Trask. Stewart and Hazel enjoyed playing bingo with friends Bill and Vivian Napolitano, cards with Earl and Edith Hegarty, and every now and then he tested his luck playing slots. He is predeceased by his mother and father Josephine and Clarance Hartford, and his sister Marthann. He is survived by his wife Hazel Hartford, a son Michael Hartford and wife Rhonda, a daughter Robin Stevens and husband Clay, brother C. Robert "Buzz" Hartford and wife Sandra, step-brothers, Blaine & Josh Hartford, grandchildren Brandon Hartford and wife Angelica, Jacob Hartford and wife Lindsay, Kalie Stevens, Erika Skiff and husband Elias, and Lance Stevens, as well as two great grandchildren Bradley Hartford and Henry Skiff, and many other family and friends. Special thanks to all staff at The Maine Veteran's Home of Scarborough for their exceptional care. Donations in Stewart's name can be made to "C-Unit Staff" at 290 US Route 1 Scarborough, 04074. A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM Saturday November 3, 2018 at the Windham Chapel of Dolby, Blais and Segee at 434 River Road, Windham. Visiting hours will be held from 12:00PM – 2:00PM prior to the service. Burial will follow at Black Point Cemetery, Scarborough.
