Obituary

Shirley P. Cobb, 91, of Schools St., Gorham, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014 at the Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough. She was born in Westbrook, the eldest daughter of Rahma and Bertha (Varnham) Pratt.  Shirley graduated from Westbrook High School in 1941and The McDowal School of Dressmaking and Design in New York City and went to work designing fashions for department stores until WW II brought her home to Westbrook. She workd with her Dad at the South Portland Shipyard building Liberty ships and later in the drafting Dept. at S.D. Warren Paper Co.   She also served as a seamstress to the Maine State Ballet for a time. After the war she married Joe Cobb and moved to Orono where he was a journalism student at U of M. and where their sons David and Stephen were born. She lived in Rangely and in Deering Center in Portland and at the family camp at Sebago Lake before moving to North Gorham and then later to Gray, Maine. After Joe died she moved back to Westbrook and Scarborough. Shirley sang for years in the First Parish choir in Portland, was active in local historical groups and continued her love of sewing and fabrics all her life.  She also enjoyed spending time on the Schooner "Mary Day" which belonged to her son Capt. Steve. She is survived by sons Davd B. and wife Ann Cobb of Conifer, CO and Capt. Stephen P. and wife Elaine (Chris) Cobb of Camden, ME; two grandchildren Kristen J. Mahoney and husband Ryan of Winthrop, MA and Julie Cobb of Boulder, CO; a great grandson Cormac Joseph Mahoney of Winthrop, MA; a sister Martha Pratt Lopez and husband Dr. Wayne K. Lopez of Scarborough; and several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM Thursday at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook.  Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Portland.  On line condolences may be expressed at blaisandhayfuneralhome.com.
