Obituary

Shirley Mooney, 92, passed away peacefully Sunday with her family at her side. Shirley was born in Skowhegan, Maine and attended Mount Merici Academy in Waterville. There, she developed a deep faith in God and the belief that He would always be at her side. She later attended and graduated from Skowhegan High School. She was married to Joseph L. Mooney four 64 years prior to his passing in 2011. Together, they had two daughters, Carol Ann and Nancy Lee. Side by side, they lovingly cared for their home and land on Woodville Rd, in Falmouth, Maine. Shirley loved colors and flowers, and planted beautiful gardens around the home, carefully planning seasonal palettes. She kept an enviable routine of early morning walks in which she would greet the morning sun and birds. Together, she and Joseph enjoyed the seasons of Maine in their home, but also enjoyed their annual travels to Florida for forty-five years. After raising her two daughters, Shirley worked in retail sales at A.H. Benoits, Owen Moore, and several Freeport shops before retiring at age 70. During World War II, she was a Red Cross volunteer. In her retirement, she still loved to be with and help others, volunteering with Meals on Wheels and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Shirley was very active and enjoyed the Freeport YMCA and many of the activities and outings provided by her residences at The Woods at Canco and 75 State Street. She leaves behind two daughters: Carol Ann Doucette and her husband Neal of Windham, and a granddaughter, Kristin Kloth of Lewiston; and Nancy Michalak and her husband Tim of Cumberland, and her grandchildren Geoffrey Michalak of Cumberland, Vanessa Michalak of Boston, and Clarissa Michalak of New York. The family would like to thank the staff of 75 State Street for their compassionate care and support and VNA Hospice. Visiting hours will be held on 4:00PM TO 6:00pm on Friday, September 21, 2018 at the Westbrook Chapel of Dolby, Blais and Segee, 35 Church Street. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00am on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Holy Martyrs Church, 266 Foreside Road, Falmouth. Interment will take place at Blanchard Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley's name may be made to 75 State Street Memorial Fund.
