Obituary

Shirley "Irene" Bragg, 87, of Westbrook passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2020, where she was finally reunited with the love of her life, Jim. She was born Shirley Irene Jensen on June 12, 1933 in South Portland, Maine, where she grew up and graduated from South Portland High School in 1951. She soon met and fell in love with James A. Bragg, and the two were married on September 20, 1952. In 1954, Irene and Jim welcomed their only child, Janice. Irene was a Navy wife, and until Jim's retirement, the little family got to explore many different places all over the country for many years. The couple eventually built a home and settled down in Westbrook, where Irene lived until her passing. Irene worked for many years doing bookkeeping until her retirement in 1995 from Locke Office Products. Irene was known to most everyone simply as Meme. She had a special talent for knitting, and for decades, made mittens and beautiful cable knit sweaters for countless adults and children. One of her fan-favorite creations, a hooded sweater, was asked for time and time again. Over the years, she lovingly made these special sweaters for her granddaughters, great granddaughters, many nieces and nephews and special friends of the family. The most coveted item she knit, however, her family fondly refers to as "Meme stockings," which are hand-knit, beautiful Christmas stockings. Meme made hundreds of these personalized stockings over many years, and these stockings have become one of the best traditions for the families and people lucky enough to have received them. For years, the family has joked about feeling sorry for anyone who didn't have a Meme stocking, because the amount of time and love that she put into each stocking was a true testament to how fortunate you were to be loved by her. You knew you made the cut in her life if you received one of these stockings. If someone made her, Janice, or her granddaughters happy, come Christmas time, they would receive a stocking of their very own. She even made stockings for the cats one year, because "they couldn't be left out!" Seeing pictures and posts over the years at Christmas time of her stockings hanging and being enjoyed by countless families on Christmas morning brought her great joy. Irene is predeceased by her beloved husband, Jim, who passed away in 1982, her parents, and 6 of her siblings. Irene leaves behind her only daughter, Janice LaFlamme, and son-in-law, Andy, of Westbrook, and 3 granddaughters: Sara LaFlamme and significant other, Jason, of Asheville, North Carolina; Katie Roma, and husband, John, of West Bath, Maine; and Nicole LaFlamme of Camden, South Carolina. She also leaves behind her greatest pride and joys of her life: her 3 great-granddaughters: Carigan Fisk, Bryn Roma, and Reece Roma. She is also survived by one brother, Edward Jensen, of Englewood, Florida, a special sister-in-law, Yvonne (Angie) Crooker of Hopkinton, Rhode Island, and many nieces and nephews. Per Irene's wishes, there will be no services. A private burial will be on Friday, October 9 at 2pm and will be attended by immediate family only. The family wishes to thank the staff at Northern Lights Hospice for the amazing care, support and love they showed toward Irene over the last several months of her life. In lieu of flowers, the family would love donations to be made to H.A.R.T. (Homeless Animal Rescue Team) of Maine, in her memory. H.A.R.T. of Maine 302 Range Rd, Cumberland, ME 04021
