Obituary

Gorham - Sheila White Nunley passed away July 8th at Gorham House in her eighty-third year. A selfless person, she lived a full life serving her community enjoying the many passions she shared with her husband, the late Robert Nunley (2015) and their family. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, daughter and friend. Her love of nature and almost any type of outdoor recreation began as a child in the countryside around her native Montreal. She studied at McGill University where she was an avid member of the McGill Outing Club, meeting her husband Bob during mutually enjoyable activities which included hiking Mt. Washington and skiing in the Laurentian mountains. Upon graduating with a degree in literature, she enjoyed an adventure of working in London and traveling in Europe. After marrying Bob, they eventually settled in Windham. Their love of the Maine coast and mountains evolved into a series of seasonal family skiing, hiking and boating rituals that started with infants in tow and continued long after retirement. She cheered on the Red Sox every season and even made it down to Fenway Park in her last year. Some of the groups she was particularly active with included the Windham Public Library, Windham Hill United Church of Christ, Meals on Wheels, Guiding Eyes for the Blind and New Marblehead Manor. She generously shared her gifts as a baker, seamstress, knitter and gardener with her extended family, friends. She loved books and poetry and was even known to craft a sonnet or two herself to mark a special occasion. For all that she brought to the world and to her family, we will be forever grateful. She is survived by her children Phil (Eileen), Falmouth and David (Teri), Pasadena CA and Carolyn Cairns (Scott), Nyack NY and grandchildren Jenna, Christopher, Alex, Molly and many beloved sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at The Windham Hill United Church of Christ in Windham, Maine on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will be held after the service at Fellowship Hall behind the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Sheila's honor may be made to the Windham Hill UCC Memorial Fund, 140 Windham Center Rd., Windham, ME 04062.
