Scott Bailey III

Westbrook, Scott Bailey III, 69, died unexpectedly on March 16, 2017 at his Westbrook home. Scott was born May 14th, 1947 in Portland, Maine to Scott G. Bailey Jr. and Helen (Thompson) Bailey. He graduated from Deering High School. Born with cerebral palsy, Scott spent most of his childhood in medical treatment including a full year in a body cast at age 12. His parents and physician encouraged him to attend Frye’s Leap Camp at Sebago Lake where he eventually became a counselor and firearms/archery instructor. It was during this time that Scott began his life-long passion for the great outdoors. He met his wife Mary (nee Pomerleau) in 1974 and they quickly formed a bonded team that lasted 41 years. Scott and Mary lived in Ogunquit and operated the Bowl & Board gift shop for 8 years. The seasonal shop allowed Scott to fulfill his quest of living life the absolute fullest. With Mary by his side, he camped, hiked, and canoed 12 of America’s most inspiring National Parks. Scott made sure they spent every March swimming in the hot springs of Okala National Forest. After Ogunquit, they settled in Portland and Scott found a year round camp on Highland Lake. The camp allowed them to share their love of all things outdoors by hosting many friends and their families to long days of fun on the lake and great meals following. In his early years Scott honed his native Mainer skills by working at Porteous Dept. store, Old Port Fish Market, loading trucks at LL Bean, and Frost Marine Boat Sales. Scott took pride in working hard for over 30 years before the complications of cerebral palsy became too great an obstacle. During his disability hearing the judge stated she was astounded by his work ethic and determination to support himself and his wife for so many years. Scott did not want his early retirement or disability to affect their lifestyle. In his last years he became a master at managing the home economy and domestic chores so he and Mary could continue living “the Good Life”. Scott is survived by his loving wife Mary Bailey, his brother-in-law, Stephen Pomerleau and partner MaryLou Shook as well his beloved niece Jennifer Pomerleau. A memorial service is to be held on Saturday, March 25th at 11:30 at the Wilde Memorial Church at Evergreen Cemetery. A celebration of Scott’s life will be following.
