Ruth Ellen (Tyler) Manchester, 95 passed away peacefully June 26 at the Gorham House after a 7 ½ year residency there. A longtime resident of Windham, Ruth was the daughter of Orin H. and Miriam A. (Glidden) Tyler. Ruth was born in Dover-Foxcroft on September 23, 1921 and already had three older brothers. At an early age her father moved the family first to Cumberland and then to Portland looking for work. The family moved around a lot always looking for a better apartment. At various times they lived in the Bayside area, on Munjoy Hill, in the Parkside area near Deering Oaks, and later on Congress St. near Maine Medical Center. Ruth graduated from Portland High School in 1938. Some of her happiest memories are trips to Old Orchard, visits to family in Bartlett N.H., spending time in the summer at her uncle's farm in Blanchard and going to town by horse and buggy. One other favorite activity was skating at Deering Oaks. Her brother Ammon was always there to look after her and to escort her to occasional movies. At the age of 15 the family moved to Windham where she met the love of her life Stephen Manchester. They traveled all over southern Maine together by motorcycle and every Saturday night they would attend dances, a lifetime favorite activity. They were married February 28, 1942 moving to the Manchester family farm in North Windham, then to Whites Bridge and finally settling on Rt. 302 in North Windham where they lived for 60 years. Ruth was a stay at home mom while her children were in school where she sewed clothing and costumes for her children and draperies for Sears Roebuck. Later she worked for Canal Bank and retired from the U.S. Post Office. She was a member of the North Windham Union Church and the Windham Garden Club. Ruth played piano and loved music especially Lawrence Welk Ruth is survived by sons Stephen T. and wife Sally of Hollis, Warren J. of Raymond, a daughter Marian R. and husband Tim Walton of Livermore, and daughter Susan M. and husband Dan Wheeler of Bethlehem, PA. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents Orin and Miriam Tyler, brothers Edward, Ammon, and Herbert, a younger sister Nancy Murphy of Albuquerque N.M. and a daughter Diane Allen of Cumberland.
