PORTLAND Ruth J. Mickus, 96, died on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at Fallbrook Woods. Born July 15, 1921 in Westbrook, the daughter of the late Peter and Jennie Nielsen. Ruth graduated from Westbrook High School. Early in her career, she was Deputy City Clerk for the City of Westbrook. Ruth then became a beautician and owned her own beauty shop. She married and gave up her beauty shop to stay at home to raise her family. She was a leader of the Girl Scout Brownies, member of the Westbrook Women's Club, and member of the International Lilac Society. She loved to garden and especially her lilacs, of which she had several varieties in her yard. Her love also was her summer camp on Sebago Lake Basin. She loved picking blueberries and even swam in the lake in her nineties. Her love also was to cook all her Danish recipes, and had hobbies of knitting, crocheting and she also won an award for her beautiful tatted doilies. She was proud of her Danish heritage and didn't hesitate to say she was pure Danish. Her love was to entertain and all were always welcome with a cup of coffee and a delicious Danish cookie. Mickus and his wife Freely of San Diego, CA; three granddaughters, Robyn Turner and husband Glenn of Wilmington, MA, Nancy Silva and husband Louis of Tewksbury, MA and Brenna Mickus of Seattle, WA; and one great-granddaughter, Jessica Turner. The family would like to thank Fallbrook Woods Residential Care, Portland for their loving care of Ruth during the last three years of her life.
