Obituary

Westbrook – Ruth A. Chretien, 78, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 3, 2025, at Mercy Hospital in Portland. She was born on September 1, 1946, in Portland, Maine, the daughter of Frank and Ruth (Packard) Smith. Ruth grew up in Scarborough and graduated from Scarborough High School with the Class of 1965. On June 1, 1985, she married the love of her life, Richard "Dick" Chretien, and together they built a life filled with faith, family, and community. A devoted member of St. Hyacinth Church, Ruth served as a Eucharistic Minister and was actively involved with The Daughters of Isabella, the Westbrook Together Days Committee, and the Class of '65 Ladies' Lunch Group. She also dedicated her time to Boy Scout Troop 87 and Cub Scout Pack 87, supporting youth programs that meant so much to her family. Ruth was passionate about cooking and loved bringing people together for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter celebrations. More than anything, she cherished time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, who brought her immense joy. She is survived by her beloved husband, Dick; her children, Frederick L. Kennedy Jr. and his wife, Laurel Kennedy, of Winthrop, MA, and Michael Kennedy and his wife, Kailen Kennedy, of Westbrook, ME., her treasured grandchildren, Grace and Finnegan Kennedy, and several nieces and nephews. Ruth was predeceased by her parents, Frank R. and Ruth L. Smith of Portland, ME., brother Frank Smith of Augusta, GA., Sister Mary Scott of Windham, and brother Leroy Smith of Florida. Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, from 9:00 to 10:00 AM at St. Hyacinth Church, 268 Brown Street, Westbrook, ME. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 AM. Burial will take place in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ruth's memory may be made directly to Boy Scout Troop 87, 31 Arlington Ave. Westbrook, ME.
