Obituary

SCARBOROUGH – Roy Tergesen, 92, died on January 23, 2018 at Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was born in Staten Island, NY, on November 24, 1925, the son of Alf and Susanna (Ness) Tergesen. Roy grew up in New York, and was a graduate of Annadale High School (Staten Island). On July 24, 1943, he joined the United States Navy, and proudly served his country in Germany and elsewhere overseas aboard the USS Adair during WWII. He married the love of his life on May 16, 1953, Veronica T. Shields. Together they moved to Levittown, New York, and then to North Branford, Connecticut where they adopted their 2 children. They returned to New York in 1967 and settled in Red Hook, where they raised their family, until they moved to Windham, Maine in 1978. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Roy spent his post-military career in the insurance industry as a claims adjuster retiring in 1993 from North East Insurance Group in Scarborough. He enjoyed traveling up and down the east coast with his wife often stopping along the way to visit family. He was an avid reader of war and historical novels, found peace tending to his flower gardens, and could bend anyone's ear retelling his war stories. He loved playing a casual game of golf and enjoyed a good yard sale. Roy had a warm smile and a gentle soft-spoken personality. He was one of the sweetest men you would ever meet. Roy is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Veronica Tergesen; daughter, Kathryn Tergesen, of Portland; granddaughter, Shandi Marie Tergesen of Phoenix, AZ; nieces, Beverly Woodall, Susan Kaufman and Gail O'Hara; and nephew Barton Meyers. In addition to his parents, Roy is predeceased by his son, Christian Tergesen; brother John Tergesen; and sister Martha Ybarra. The family would like to thank all the staff at the Maine Veterans' Home in Scarborough for all of their kind and compassionate care. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11am on Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. Arrangements by the Windham Chapel of Dolby, Blais & Segee.
