Standish – Ronald "Mickey" E. Foster, 82, died on May 11, 2016 in Yarmouth. He was born in Gorham, on January 12, 1934, the son of Eugene and Arvilla (Watson) Foster. Mickey grew up in Standish and graduated from Standish High School where he was a standout ball player, both basketball and baseball. Mickey was an undefeated right-handed pitcher with the Standish High School Lakers from 1948-1951. He was a left-handed batter and "one of the most feared hitters" of the Portland Evening Express, an all-star Triple-C baseball team. He was a successful pitcher, but also filled in at first base and the "hot-corner", third base. He attended Jack Rossiter Baseball School and, of more than 220 attendees, was one of 54 to sign a pro contract, 26 of which signed with the Washington Nationals' farm league. In 1953, he signed with the Kitty league Fulton Kentucky Baseball Club, and moved up to the Piedmont League Hagerstown Baseball club for 1954. Playing in the majors, Mickey even pitched to the famous, Mickey Mantle. In 1956, Mickey joined the United States Army, proudly serving his country until 1958. Upon returning to Maine, he started driving a tractor trailer for many different companies. He also owned his own tractor trailer, and worked for the May Flower Moving Company for many years. Mickey also worked for Standish Rescue for a short time and for Gorham Public Works, for the last 10 plus years before becoming ill. In 1972, he married the love of his life, Cathy Dawes, and they were inseparable for the last 49 years. Together they raised and raced sulky horses, racing at all the fairs, Scarborough Downs, in Foxboro, MA; and in Hinsdale, NH. His last horse, Emily's Devil, just passed away nearly a year ago. Besides, his love of horses, Mickey was fond of Great Danes, and had many of them as companions over the years. Mickey was also a member of the Presumpscot Lodge #70 A.F. & A.M. Mickey was somewhat of a lady's man, having many "girlfriends" where ever he went, from the nursing home to Friendly's Restaurant, where Cathy and he would visit weekly. Mickey is survived by his loving wife Cathy; godson, John Stephen Cross of Standish; sister-in-laws, Gloria Greene and husband Brian of Skowhegan, and Emily Copeland of Skowhegan; cousins, Janice Gryskwicz and Robert Sanborn; and his nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Orey and Cindy Gadway and all of the staff at Coastal Manor, for all the loving care and compassion they gave to Mickey over the years. A memorial service will be held at 3pm on Saturday, May 28, 2016, at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd, Windham. A visitation will be held from 1pm until the time of the service. Burial will follow at the Dow's Corner Cemetery, Cape Rd., Standish. All are invited to a celebration after the burial at Cathy's house, 164 Shaw's Mill Rd., Standish. Memorial donations in Mickey's honor may be made to the Standish Rescue, c/o Town of Standish, 175 Northeast Rd., Standish, ME 04084.
