Obituary

Ronald "Ron" Frank Norberg, 77, of Scarborough, Maine died at home Sunday, January 28, 2024 after a long, hard-fought battle with multiple illnesses, with his wife Betty by his side. Ron was the son of Harold E. Norberg, Sr. and Jessie M. (Adams) Norberg (both deceased). Ron was born in Portland, Maine and grew up there until Jr. High School. Then Ron and his parents moved to Westbrook, Maine. He lived in Westbrook and attended Westbrook High School until joining the US Army during the Viet Nam Era War. Ron served from 1965-1968 as a Specialist E-5. Ron was stationed at the Nike Missile Base in Miami, Florida in the Everglades until 1968. Ron met his wife Betty of 55 years, while serving in the US Army in Miami, FL. He and a Army buddy decided to go to the USO Club in Miami (a place to gather and socialize) and that's where he met his future wife. Ron & Betty both loved dancing, picnics in the park, the warm coastal beaches of Miami, the cold ocean beaches and lakes of Maine, and pretty much traveling to anywhere their hearts desired. In their later years they enjoyed driving down to Westbrook to the "Riverbank Park" and parking along the Presumpscot River to watch the many ducks and activities there; and driving to Pine Point Beach in Scarborough to watch the active fishing boats and beautiful ocean views in the bay. Adventure was in their blood. Ron was married to his wife Betty (Cunningham) Norberg for 55 years. They had three children together. Their daughter Sheryl (Norberg) Carr of Maine and her daughter Alexandra Carr of Conn; their son Brian R. Norberg & his wife Petra (Hepp) Norberg. Their infant son Daniel F. Norberg, who died on the day he was born. One year when their son Brian was going to get married in Germany, Ron & Betty flew over to join him in the celebration wedding to Petra and to learn about the "German Experience". They got to drive on the Autobahn, experience the ancient castles and large stately churches, drive and shop in the quaint little villages along the way. Once they even came upon some Monks that were caring for their St. Bernard dogs, that were guarding their winery building. They also liked traveling with their children Sheryl and Brian in their family car up/down the East coast from Maine to Florida. They would drive on yearly family trips, anywhere from visiting relatives in Western NC to driving down to Disney World in Orlando, Florida & Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida. Life was an adventure for Ron & Betty and their children. Ron leaves behind a brother Harold E. Norberg, Jr. & his wife Yvonne Norberg/deceased; and was predeceased by a sister Lorraine (Norberg) Johnson and her life partner Darrel Lovley, Sr; Two infant sisters Nancy Lee Norberg and Jessie Marie Norberg (both deceased). Also, sisters'n law Norma C. Grenier & family, and Judy C. Borum & husband Jim Borum. Ron also leaves behind a cousin (like a brother) Richard (Dick) Ashley & his wife Sharon Ashley; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Ron also leaves behind, many friends he made along the way in life, whom were blessed to know him. Like when Ron and his brother Harold would frequently enjoy going up to Mr. Bagel in Gorham to their mini-Coffee Club they started. Ron loved all animals and birds. He was also an avid fisherman and hunter (since his youth) for many years, going with his Dad and brother Harold. Ron retired as a Pipefitter/Welder, after 32 years working at S.D. Warren/SAPPI Paper Mill in Westbrook, Maine. Ron was a proud, strong, loving man, Husband, Father, and Grampy. Ron was a stranger to no one. He dearly loved his dog "Lady" for 12 memorable years; and his Grandogs "Jazper" of 8 years, and Charlie-Brown of 9 years. And a finale note: Ron's favorite saying to Betty every night "Sweet Dreams Sweety...have a Good Night's Sleep" In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland 217 Landing Road Westbrook, Maine 04092 Phone: (207) 854-9771 Or to your favorite Charity.
