Obituary

Rodolphe A. Marrotte   Self - Taught Master Electrician       Rodolphe ~ " Rod " ~ Marrotte, 91, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 2, surrounded by his loving family and the dedicated, caring team at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.     Rod was born June 8, 1925, the fourth of nine sons to Alfred and Cora ( Cote ) Marrotte, in Taunton, MA.          He was predeceased by seven brothers: Alfred, Gerald, Clement, Edmund, Robert, Armand and Hector.          He is survived by a brother and two sister-in-laws: Richard and Martha Marrotte and Rose Marrotte.          Rod was predeceased by his loving wife, Louise, in March 1993. They had met at his doctor's office during a check-up for a chest cold, where she placed a cold stethoscope on his back while checking vital signs.          They were married September 11, 1948. A daughter, Susan, passed away at birth. He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law: Dennis and David, both of Westbrook, Maine; Mrs. David ( Leigh Ann ) Marrotte; A grandson, Jeremy of Portland and a granddaughter, Mrs. Michael (Keli) Ruby of Windham, and two great granddaughters, Rylee and Abigail Ruby.     As a teenager, Rod took on the responsibility of caregiver for his beloved grandfather at home, who taught him all the secrets and proper procedures for carpentry.          When Hurricane Sandy came close four years ago, Rod still remembered the power and awe of the Great New England Hurricane of September 1938.          In the '30's, He worked at a local dairy farm, learning to drive the Reo truck to deliver fresh milk and cream in glass bottles.          During WW2, his father's electric motor repair business worked night and day, in keeping the nearby US Army De-embarkation Camp Myles Standish operating.          In his high school days, two projects established his expertise in the electrical field - installing large batteries and starters in the city's fire trucks to replace the dangerous hand crank engine starting mechanisms. That earned the praise of the Taunton Fire Chief on an October visit to the high school. The second project was the building of a single seat battery powered 4 wheel car that could travel a round trip 30 miles on a single battery charge !      A decision to move to northern New Hampshire resulted in several different occupations and learning about snowy winters ! Rod worked at Stultz Electric in Westbrook, Maine, earning a much deserved reputation as a successful Troubleshooter, solving many problems and returning different businesses to full operation.         A long dreamed goal to secure his Master Electrician's License was realized in the mid '60s.         In the late 80's after Rod and Louise both retired, he purchased an RV. A three month trip to Alaska in 1989 was another long dreamed accomplishment. In 1996, he and Dennis went out to western Canada to visit friends Rod and Louise had met in the Yukon on the Alaska trip.         After Louise passed away, a chance meeting in a McDonalds cemented a life long friendship with Jim Sheppard, a WW2 Tuskegee Airman. A thrill they shared was an Autumn glider flight around Mount Washington.         The past several years, a series of illnesses slowly took their toll on a brave and courageous man. Dennis took on the full time role as his Dad's Caregiver at home.         The family wants to thank everyone at the Southern Maine Hospice Team, Home Care Solutions and especially, the Team at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, for their dedication, loving care and respect they showed to Rod and his family.         Friends and family are invited to Blais and Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church Street, and William Clarke Drive, in Westbrook, for Visiting Hours: 6 - 8PM, Wednesday, Nov.9.          On Thursday morning, November 10, a Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 268 Brown Street, Westbrook, starting at 10 am.  Interment will be held at Saint Hyacinth's Cemetery, Stroudwater Street, Westbrook, following the Mass at Saint Anthony of Padua Church.       In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the wonderful, compassionate people at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House,   11 Hunnewell Road, Scarborough, ME. 04074       and the Mount Washington Observatory, as a Tribute Gift:                     www.mountwashington.org
