WESTBROOK - Rock Ellison Green passed away on May 13th, 2019 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough at the age of 65 due to a massive stroke. He was born December 2nd 1953 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Rock grew up on Bailey Island, the son of a lobsterman. He enjoyed all the wonders and adventures that come with being a healthy young boy growing up on an island on the coast of Maine. He appreciated this luck of the draw his entire life. Many years ago, Rock's mother had to fill in at work for her sister at the old Brunswick Town Office on Maine Street. With no time to find a baby sitter she had to bring her two boys to work with her. A man who worked in the office went to the store and bought a bag of balloons for the boys to keep them entertained. Rock coerced his younger brother into helping him fill all the balloons with water then take them four flights up to the balcony that overlooked Maine Street. He instructed his brother to wait and not drop any balloons on anybody until there was " A good bunch of em. " congregated below. The boys launched a barrage of balloons on Rock's perfectly timed signal. The mission was a complete success and well worth the reprimands from a number of adults including a Brunswick Police officer. It wasn't the first or last time Rock would find himself in a bit of trouble. Rock played recreational hockey and baseball on Brunswick leagues starting at a very young age and continued to play sports at Brunswick High School where he graduated in 1972. He took various college courses at different times and places in his life. He had a strong interest in film and photography and especially enjoyed relevant courses he took at Boston University. Rock worked at a variety of jobs during his 65 years. He was a commercial fisherman, a deck hand on tugboats in the Gulf of Mexico, newspaper advertising, sales and circulation, insurance and retail sales, just to name a few. At various times in his life he worked for The Portland Press Herald, L.L. Bean and B.I.W. He worked at Maine Med assisting psych patients a few years back. When he was admitted with his recent illness people he had worked with came off their floors to look in on him and say how good he had been with the patients. He had an extraordinary work ethic. A lifelong sports fan, he especially enjoyed being the sports cameraman for local television networks. He filmed both Maine high school and professional sports teams including the Bruins and Patriots. Even NASCAR. He had some great stories about what went on at half time in the New England Patriots locker room. He had a press pass and took full advantage of it. Rock was a standout Maine runner. From 1978 to 1987, he completed more than 40 marathons and ultra-marathons, including 50- and 100-milers and 12- and 24-hour runs with at least nine wins in races of 26.2 miles and over. He was a three-time winner of the "Triple Crown of Marathoning," sponsored by Maine Running Magazine. He forged many friendships within the running community during his running career. He was inducted into The Maine Running Hall of fame in November 2018. He would not consider this his greatest achievement. His greatest achievement would be his 42 plus years of sobriety and the hundreds of recovering alcoholics he has helped and supported down through the years. He is well known, loved and respected in the AA community in the Portland area and beyond. He has held many positions of responsibility within the fellowship. Rock was predeceased by his father Robert Green of Harpswell. He leaves behind his Mother Grace Green of St. Cloud, Fl. His sister Sandra Schoenke, her husband George and step niece Jeanne of Boca Raton Florida. His brother Kirk of Harpswell. His lifelong best friend and companion Diana Jordan and her mother Jean of Westbrook. His 19-year-old cat Zaney and his AA family. He will be sadly missed.
