Obituary

Robert (Bob) Rubio, 86, died on March 8 in his home at Freeport Place Assisted Living surrounded by his three children. He was born on May 11, 1932 at the Pepe'ekeo Sugar Cane Plantation Hospital near Hilo, HI. He was the only son of Luciano J. Rubio, born in the Philippine Islands and Rose Tavares born in Paukaa, Hawaii. He had nine sisters, three of which are still living (Dorothy Ah Sing of Hilo, Shirley Cecconi of Tennessee and Rose Marie Martinez of Oahu). Bob was raised in Paukaa, Hawaii and graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Hilo in 1951. After graduation, he immediately joined the National Guard and then the United States Coast Guard where he trained in Alameda, CA, Great Lakes, IL and CGC Mackinaw. He was eventually stationed at the Coast Guard's Ninth District Air Station, situated on the southern end of Grand Traverse Bay in Northern Michigan where he served until 1959. This is where he met his first wife, Jacqueline Bench (1935-2016), and had his first two children, Bobby L. Rubio, Jr. (1956-1968) and Tanda K. Rubio-Butts (1958). Bob married Sharon K. Nelson (1943-1998) in 1962 and had his second son, Michael J. Rubio (1963) and twin daughters, Sheila A. Rubio-Rodriquez (1967) and Cheryl Lynn Rubio, who died shortly after birth. Bob and Sharon loved to travel and visited every US state except Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. Bob lived his life to the fullest. He worked hard so he could play harder! He retired in 1998 from Grinwald Dodge-Chrysler-Plymouth in Watertown, WI where he was an auto technician for over 20 years. Sometimes he worked up to three jobs at one time to provide for his family and still enjoy the things he wanted to do. He enjoyed music, dancing, bowling and bingo. Following his retirement, he relocated to Maine to be closer to most of his grandchildren. There he found a new passion in golf. He worked at Nonesuch River Golf Club in Scarborough for 20 years in a variety of positions. Besides watching his beloved Green Bay Packers and the Boston Red Sox, nothing was more important to Bob than his family. He will be deeply missed and is survived by his third wife, Clara Bowie-Rubio (1936), his three children, Tanda (Scott) Butts of Windham, ME, Michael (Pamela) Rubio of West Bend, WI, Sheila (James) Rodriquez of South Portland, ME and his loving step-daughter, Terry Thurlow of Durham, ME. The joy he got from being a grandfather was unmatched. His nine grandchildren were the light of his life: Paul (Amanda) Rodriquez, Alta Butts, Bebe Butts, Megan Rodriquez, Jackson Butts, George Butts, Alexander Makaio Rubio, Whitney Thurlow and JT Thurlow. Bob will be watching over all of them, along with his first great-grandson, Luciano Christopher Rodriquez, expected in May. Our family wishes to thank all the staff at Freeport Place for their kindness and support. We especially want to thank Sommer Maybee, who's encouragement of hallway golfing, football pools and happy hours brought smiles to our dad's last year. We are humbled by the care and compassion shown to us by Ryan Jennings and the whole Beacon Hospice team this last month. Bob's memorial service will be held in Windham, Maine on March 25th at 5pm at the Dolby Funeral Chapel located at 434 River Road, Windham, ME 04062. There will be a service in July to bury his ashes along-side his daughter and second wife, Sharon Rubio, at Memorial Gardens in Traverse City, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider donating to the cause of your choice (i.e., American heart association, Alzheimer's disease, Diabetic research, hospice services, etc.).
