Robert Berkeley Minor, 95, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2017, in South Portland. He was born in San Antonio, Texas, on September 17, 1921 to Houston and Pinckney (Jones) Minor. After attending business college in San Antonio, Bob entered the U.S. Coast Guard, and eventually was stationed in South Portland, Maine. While there he went on a blind date with Marjorie Cheney of Portland. They were married on March 6, 1943, and celebrated 70 years of marriage a few weeks before she passed away. He served for over 5 years with the Coast Guard; a portion of that time he was on an LST (landing ship tank). He participated in 3 invasions in Salerno, Anzio and Utah Beach in Normandy. Following the war, he and Marjorie settled in Portland, and Maine became his home, although a part of his heart was always in Texas. Together they raised 4 daughters. In 1950, he went to work for Casco Bank & Trust Company. His work with the bank would take him to Buckfield, Limerick and Gorham, in the days when small-town branch managers were not just tellers and loan officers, but also financial advisors. He was widely known and greatly respected by his customers. He became an Assistant Vice President of the bank during the 41 years that he worked for Casco. He was an active member of the Cressey Road (formerly School St.) UMC for nearly 50 years, where he became a Certified Lay Speaker, Financial Secretary and lay leader. He was a charter member and Past Worthy Patron of the Mountain View Chapter, OES, in Buckfield. He was also a 32-degree Mason, Valley of Portland, and a member of Evening Star Lodge #147. He was a wonderful, loving man, devoted to his family. He loved nothing more than doing things with his grandchildren, all of whom remember him taking them for walks and to the "candy store," and attending as many of their school events as possible. Besides his parents and his beloved wife, he was predeceased by 4 sisters, Dorothea, Margaret, Lucie and Mary, and a brother Russell. He is survived by 4 daughters: Margaret and Richard Boislard, Kathleen and Lester Baker, Rebecca and David Lenz, and Ellen Stanley. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Michael (Jennifer) Boislard, Jennifer (Patrick) Bowdish, Christopher (Martha) Baker, Andrew Baker, Erin (Justin) Throwe, Sarah (Brian) Douglas, Emily Lenz (Cass Newell), Jesse Stanley and Johanna Stanley; and 11 great grandchildren: Margaret and Lauren Boislard, Seamus and Sinead Bowdish, Jack, Lilah and Brandon Douglas, Berkeley and Campbell Baker, and Benjamin and Abigail Throwe. The family is forever grateful to the staff of South Portland Nursing Home, who provided exceptional care for the last 6 years of his life. Family and friends are invited to attend an hour of visitation on Sunday, June 11, 2017 from 1-2 PM in the fellowship hall, at Cressey Road United Methodist Church, 89 Cressey Rd. Gorham. A Masonic Ritualistic Service will follow at 2:00 PM followed by a funeral service. A graveside committal service with military honors will be held at Mayberry Cemetery on Park Rd. in Windham following the funeral service. Arrangements are under the care of Dolby Funeral Chapel, Windham. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Bob's memory to Cressey Rd UMC, or to a veteran's organization of your choice.
