Robert Lermond Kimball, age 92, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 6, 2016 after a brief illness. He was born on March 21, 1924 in Gorham ME and graduated from Gorham High School in 1942. He married Dorothy Willey on June 21, 1947. He was predeceased by wife Dorothy, parents Clinton and Dorothy Kimball, brother William, sister Gertrude and daughter Jeanne (Mrs. Henry Strout.) He is survived by 4 daughters, Judith (Mrs. Earl MacVane) of Cliff Island, Katherine (Mrs. James Post) of Standish, Karen Kimball of West Baldwin, Linda Kimball of Gorham ME, 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Robert was very outgoing and had many friends. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp and was called up in 1944. He was assigned to the 9th Air Force Service Command, crossed the Channel on D-Day and waded ashore on the beach of Normandy, France. He was awarded Certificate of Merit by the country of France for fighting to liberate their country. After the war, he returned to college where he studied Drafting; he left to accept a job with the Postal Service. He worked many jobs over the years, but his primary occupation was a Rural Letter Carrier for the USPS for 31 years. Robert was a volunteer on the Gorham Fire Department in 1947, fighting the big fire with the crew that saved part of Waterboro. He loved hunting, fishing and taking his family camping in Canada when the children were young. He became a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) in 1955 and later served as Grand Warden, Deputy Grand Master and Grand Master for the State of Maine. He was one of the 6 original founding fathers of the Gorham Rescue Squad and he volunteered on the squad for 20 years, holding the position of Chief at one point. He was nominated twice for the Jefferson Award and received a Special Merit Citation for EMS in 1988. He enjoyed music, playing keyboard "by ear" and singing. He built 2 houses and a 20' by 40' in-ground swimming pool. He was a very active man and helped many people during his lifetime. After he retired, he and his wife sold their home in Gorham and in 1996 they bought a place in AZ, where they lived every winter thereafter. They were affectionately called "snow birds," as they returned to Maine every summer. Robert enjoyed making jewelry, working with silver, and traveling with his wife, Dorothy, who passed away in 2004. He learned to play the guitar at age 84. He moved into Gorham House in September 2013 and resided there until his death. A graveside service will be held at the Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Augusta on Friday, August 26, 2016 at 2 PM with Military Honors. There will also be a Memorial gathering from 2-4 PM on Sunday, August 28, 2016 at Methodist Church on Cressey Road in Gorham, ME. He led an amazing life and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
