Obituary

DENMARK – Robert L. Hunt, 87, died on March 7, 2018 at Bridgton Health Care Center. He was born in Cumberland, ME, August 11, 1930, the son of Philip and Thelma (Watson) Hunt. Bob graduated from Windham High School in 1949 and earned his Bachelor's (1953) and Master's (1973) degrees from Gorham State Teachers College (USM). Bob had a distinguished 30 year career as a biology teacher and head of the science department at Windham High School and was honored as Maine's Biology Teacher of the Year in 1971. He taught Windham students not only as a science teacher, but also as Driver Ed Instructor, ParaMed Club and Student Council Advisor. He was the WHS Swim Coach and American Red Cross Swim Instructor & Coordinator of swimming lessons for many years at the family cottage on the shores of Little Sebago Lake. He gave back to his community, serving from 1973-1978 as Windham Selectman and Town Council member and chair. Bob participated in the Civil Air Patrol, Civil Defense, State Police Reserves, North Windham Fire Department firefighter and the First Aid Trainer for the original Windham Rescue Unit as it was being established by the Windham Lions Club. In later years, he served on the Saco River Corridor Commission and was a member of the Denmark Planning Board. To Sebago Lake State Park campers, he was known as "Uncle Bob" the Ranger Naturalist, leading nature hikes and guiding canoe trips up the Songo River, narrating River Queen excursions through the historic Songo Lock and sharing the natural history of the region. After his retirement from teaching in 1983, Bob became manager of Rangeley Lake State Park, and later returned to Sebago, where he worked through the summer of 2017. Generations of campers, Bob's children, grandchildren and great grandchildren looked forward to visiting with "Uncle Bob" at the Nature Center, earning their Junior Ranger badges and learning from the leeches, animal tracks, skulls and skins, fossils, rock collections and other natural history exhibits. In later years, Bob and his wife Betty enjoyed taking snowmobile trips, touring on their Gold Wing motorcycle regionally and to Canada for Blue Knights events and going on camping adventures with their Pha-Ka-Wee Tribe of friends. Bob loved to fish and hunt, especially at the family camp in the North Maine Woods. He was a Master Maine Guide as well as a Sportsman's Alliance of Maine and NRA life member, and continued to proudly wear his NRA hat even during his stay at the Bridgton Health Care Center. Bob gave back fraternally as a member of Presumpscot Lodge #70 A.F. & A.M. Master Mason, Past Patron of Evangeline Chapter #167, Order of the Eastern Star, and as a proud member of the Kora Shrine.
