Obituary

Robert "Bob" Holmes, from up in West Gorham, passed away peacefully on September 9, surrounded by loved ones, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born on September 13, 1947 in Portland Maine, the son of Lawrence and Jessie Holmes. Bob attended Gorham Schools before graduating from Cheverus in 1965. He served in the US Army prior to obtaining his business degree from the University of Southern Maine. Bob worked for the US Postal Service for 36 years before retiring in 2005. In his retirement he worked in housekeeping at Springbrook Nursing Home, a time he greatly enjoyed. A large part of Bob's life was devoted to Standardbred horse racing. Most recently Bob enjoyed tending to his garden, Wing Night at Fajita Grill and the occasional fireball shot. Bob was known and loved by many for his dry sense of humor and words of wisdom. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Martha; together they have two sons, Philip and Daniel and four daughters Jessica, Alison (Brian) Sherman and Alyssa and Laura Marceau. His children were the true lights of his life. Bob is also survived by his siblings Anne Winters, Catherine(Paul) Cooper, John (Sylvia)Holmes, and sister in law Betty Holmes. Bob also has 6 grandchildren Lily, Layla, Leah, Jackson, Sidney and Addison, as well as several nieces and nephews and close friends he considered family. Predeceased by his parents as well as brothers David and Joseph. A memorial service will be held at 6:00PM Wednesday September 13th, Bob's 70th birthday, at the Gorham Chapel of Dolby Funeral Chapels 76 State Street, Gorham.
