Obituary

WESTBROOK— Robert Arthur "Bob" Chamard Sr., 86, passed away surrounded by his family on October 10, 2017 at Maine Medical Center. He was born in Westbrook on April 12, 1931, a son of Louis and Gladys (Blake) Chamard. Bob grew up in Westbrook, and attended school locally. His hard work ethic began at the young age of 13 when he started working for Bill Clark on the farm, later becoming the milkman. On January 3, 1951, he married Theresa Lewis in Portland. They made their home in Westbrook, raising their family. Bob spent his early career working for Sappi in Westbrook, working his way up to foreman of the Research Lab. Retiring from Sappi at the age of 59, Bob then went on to work at his grandson's businesses, Pyramid & Checksforless.com. He was the "go-to" guy who was proud to have worked alongside his grandsons. He was involved with all of the day-to-day operations and was happy to do anything asked of him. Bob's hard work ethic was an inspiration to his family and key to his success. In addition to his work life, Bob was a very dedicated member of the Westbrook Community, serving as Captain of Ladder 1 Westbrook Volunteer Fire Department from 1971 to 1986 and was a Captain with the Fire Police Department of Westbrook from 1994 to 2015. Part of his passion for the fire police department was the comradery of the volunteers and being a helping hand to those in emergency situations. Bob was a character with a great sense of humor and many interests in life; he enjoyed playing cribbage, candlepin bowling, 5-cent card games and ice cold Budweiser. He was often seen reading the daily newspaper, watching NASCAR, or rooting for his favorite New England sports team. Bob was a talented horseshoe player and a fabulous dancer, winning many dance competitions with his wife Theresa. Many of Bob's favorite pastimes were spent at the family camp on Sebago Lake; camp was Bob's special place held dear in his heart. It gave him much joy to watch his family grow and spend countless summers at the lake, eventually passing it down to the younger generation. Above all, Bob or "Gramps" was a family man whose largest passion and joy in life was his family. In their eyes, he was a mentor, friend, and hero. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Theresa Chamard of Westbrook; children, Cindy L. Wilson and her husband David of Yarmouth, and Robert A. Chamard and his wife Patricia of Portland; grandchildren, Carl J. LeFevre and his wife, Mori of Cumberland, Christopher J. LeFevre and his wife Patricia of Falmouth, Destiny Chamard of Portland, Samantha Chamard of Portland; great grandchildren, Lindsey and Logan LeFevre of Cumberland and Joshua, Marissa and Andrew LeFevre of Falmouth; a brother, Raymond Chamard and his wife Gloria of Windham; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Louis Chamard, predeceased Robert. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Doctors and nurses of the ICU Section 4 Unit at Maine Medical Center for the wonderful care they provided Bob. A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 15, 2017 from 3pm to 6pm at Blais and Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook, ME 04092. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 16 at 11am at the funeral home with burial to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Westbrook.
