Obituary

Robert E. Burton, 86, formerly of Westbrook, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 25, 2014 at Birchwoods at Canco. He was born in Gorham, NH the son of John and Naomi (Warner) Burton.  Robert served as a cook in the Navy during World War II.  He worked at the S.D. Warren Paper Co for over 43 years before retiring as head of scheduling. Robert was a Little League Coach, a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 84, President of the Westbrook High School Marching Band Boosters, a member of the Knights of Pythias for over 50 years and a member of the American Legion Post 62, where he served as Commander.  He also served on numerous boards and committees at the Westbrook Warren Congregational Church, where he was instrumental in beginning the bean suppers and the Festival of Trees, and a Deacon Emeritus.   Robert was predeceased by his wife Carolyn Carr Burton in 2003, and their sons Gary Burton in 1999 and Duane in 2010, his sisters Carol Damerall and Penelope Potter; and his brothers David and Jack. He is survived by his sons Alan and his wife Cheryl of Winslow, and Dale and his wife Terri of Westbrook; daughter Donna Gaudet and her husband Arnold of Westbrook; his sister Patricia Candela of Trenton, ME; ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; his sister-in-law Gloria Merrill of Portland; and several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook.  A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Thursday at the Westbrook Warren Congregational Church.  Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.  On line condolences may be expressed at blaisandhayfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Westbrook Warren Congregational Church, for Pilgrim Lodge Scholarships, 810 Main St., Westbrook, ME 04092.
