Colonel Robert E. Barton was born on January 16, 1930 in Westbrook to Ione Ladd and George Barton. Colonel Barton married Beverly Abbott in 1973 and celebrated 50 years of marriage last year. After ROTC, Barton entered the Army and served for 2 years as a paratrooper; after which he rejoined the Reservist for 28 years. After his 2 years of service, he took courses in Greek and taught Latin at Bowden College. He earned a Master's degree in Latin from Brown University. He went on to teach Latin at South Portland High, Kimble Union Academy, and Lisbon High until 1986. Colonel Barton served as an active member of Post 62 in Westbrook, Masonic Sojourners #92, and the Military Order of World Wars. He served as the president of each.
