Obituary

WINDHAM - It is with great sadness that the family of Robert M. Atterbury shares his passing after a brief illness, on Saturday, April 28th, 2018. Robert was born on July 31st, 1930 to Marie Atterbury of Boston, MA. After his early years, spent primarily in boarding/foster homes, he enlisted in the Air Force, where he served in Intelligence during the Korean Conflict in the early 1950's. Robert had unique and diverse interests in life including being an illustrator, painter, & cartoonist, a water safety instructor and summer camp director, a cook, chief, and steward aboard the Lightship Nantucket, he served on many committees for the town of Windham, ME, and he was an active participant in his church and choir. His career as an elementary school teacher in New York gave him great satisfaction: he was involved with curriculum improvement and advancement, research and development, and he devised and organized the Outdoor Education Program that other New York schools later copied. Robert and his family lived for two years in East Africa as part of the Teacher Education in East Africa Project, and he and they traveled extensively after that. Robert was deeply loved by the many people that he mentored and befriended throughout his life and will be remembered for his humor and insight, his love of classical organ music and aviation, and his devotion to teaching others expression through art. Robert was preceded in death by his wife and life partner, Betty, and is survived by his children Christine Altman, of Stamford, NY; Carolyn Prince, of Summerset, SD; Robert Atterbury, of Dorchester MA; his grandchildren, Catherine and James Prince; and his sister Susan Mason and brother Brian McNerney. Memorial donations may be made in to South Portland Maine VNA Hospice, 50 Foden Road, South Portland, ME 04106 or to the Betty W. Atterbury Scholarship Fund at the University of Southern Maine, 103 Corthell Hall, 37 College Avenue, Gorham, ME 04038.
