Obituary

Hollis Center – Robert A. Atkinson, Sr., 85, died on September 24, 2016 in Scarborough at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. He was born in Hollis Center, on October 17, 1930, the son of Jay and Bertha (Lombard) Atkinson. Bob grew up in Hollis Center and attended local schools. After high school, he joined the United States Army, and proudly served his country in Korea during the Korea Conflict. When he returned home, he married Barbara Beecher on April 17, 1955, and together they raised their three children. Bob was a hard worker and worked a variety of jobs over the years. He was the credit manager for Dixon Brothers' Oil, Chief of Gorham Rescue, and a funeral attendant for Morrell York in Gorham for over a decade. Bob truly enjoyed working with Morrell, and being able to help support the grieving families that he encountered. He was a member of the American Legion in Avon Park, Florida where he wintered for over 30 years. In his spare time, Bob enjoyed wood working, making furniture, tables, benches, and pouting chairs, and was an outstanding pool player. Bob was a compassionate man, and his love for his family came before all else. He is survived by his beloved wife of over 61 years, Barbara; son, Robert A. Atkinson, Jr. and wife Monica of Windham; daughter, Kimberly Gregoire and Stephen of Hollis; daughter-in-law, Debby Atkinson of TX; grandchildren, Ashley Stiles and husband Keith, Daniel Atkinson, Samuel Atkinson, Natasha Mitsin and husband Brian, Erin Mason, Zackary Locke, Chelsea Locke, and Dakota Atkinson; great grandchildren, Royce, Pyper, Dylan, Austin, Dalton, Kayley, Kyle, Isabelle, Isaiah, Jacob, Skyler, Colby, and Mason; brother Richard "Sandy" and wife Beverly of Bar Mills; sister, Charolette Bryant and husband John of Buxton; and many nieces and nephews.
