Obituary

Rita (Poirier) LaChance was born December 26, 1927 in Westbrook at her family home, where she would continue to live the first 80 years of her life. On May 22, 1948, she married her husband, Lewis LaChance. The couple welcomed four children together, Paul, Gerard, Armand, and Laura. Rita found passion in being a homemaker and raising her family. She loved cooking, baking, knitting, sewing, gardening, and canning her harvest. She made a mean meat pie! Rita was often known to sew or knit baby blankets for her grandchildren and loved spending her summers "uptah camp" on Sebago Lake. Rita and Lewis enjoyed nearly 50 years of marriage before he predeceased her in 1994. Rita moved to Hiram with Laura in 2007. Since then, she has cherished life's simple joys: watching the birds at the window, spending time with their pets, scrap-booking, seeing snowmen, napping with her cat PicklePuss, being protected and woken up by her dogs, spending hours chatting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, retelling the stories of her life, indulging in a little bit of chocolate when she could, and the occasional whiskey and water. Rita's last days on Earth were peaceful and pain-free. She got to be surrounded by all the love she created for this world. On Tuesday, September 26th, three months shy of her 96th birthday, surrounded by love and family at home, Rita reunited with Lewis. Rita is survived by her sister Pauline of Steep Falls, four children, Paul of Westbrook, Gerard and wife Tammy of Standish, Armand and wife Mary, of Raymond, and daughter Laura of Hiram, as well as eleven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind several brothers-and-sisters-in-law and countless nieces and nephews she loved very much. She is predeceased by her parents, Flora and Camille Poirier, her brother Robert, and her daughter-in-law, Bonnie. Graveside Services will be held on Thursday, October 5th, at 1PM at Brooklawn Memorial Park Cemetery, 2002 Congress Street, Portland ME 04102. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Laura Stubbs, 171 New Settlement Road, Hiram, ME 04041
