OLD ORCHARD – Richard Preble Littlefield, 89, known to his friends as Dick, of Old Orchard passed away peacefully at the Gosnell House in Scarborough, Maine on Saturday, May 27th following a bout of bladder cancer. He was born on March 27, 1928 in Hudson, Massachusetts, son of Maynard and Louise Littlefield. Attending school in New Hampshire to the 9th grade when at the very young age of 16, Dick entered the US Navy to service at sea. After his 4 years of service, he reenlisted this time into the branch of the US Marine Corp serving for 4 more years as a foot soldier in Korea. Following his military service, Dick worked for many years as a long and short haul truck driver working for such companies as, Magarys Bangor, Quinn's Freight Way, Maine Borders Freight Way, Coles Express, Hemingway Transportation, JJ Nissen, Direnzo and Sons, Androscoggin Mill, and Maine Medical Center. After retiring from the Teamsters, Dick and his son Larry started their own trucking company (R&L Transportation) which subcontracted with RC Moore. As a driver for his company, Dick's wife Norma retired from Maine Medical Center to accompany him on his deliveries. During these years, Dick was employed as the first Security Guard at the Portland Exposition Building then under the direction of the Maine Teachers Association. Later to be joined by his son, Larry Littlefield, who became the Director of Security. Dick's wife, Norma, also joined the team of Security and the two were featured in the Portland Press Herald for running such events as the Flea Market at the Portland Expo. While working security, this job covered such areas as Portland Exposition Building Events, Hadlock Field, Merrill Auditorium, Ocean Gateway, Portland Ice Arena, Portland Sea Dogs, and the Cumberland County Civic Center. Dick was also one of the security staff for the Extreme Make Over in Wells, Maine as an employee for his son's (Larry Littlefield) security company (APS). Following the loss of his son, Larry and illness of his wife Norma, Dick retired at the age of 79. For 12 years, Dick continued to be a devoted husband and spent his days at the Barron Center, holding his wife's hand at such activities as the outdoor concerts. Always to finish their day watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. Following the death of his wife of 63 years, Dick was handed his own fate. Dick was a person that loved people, everywhere he went he was known. He was a Marine that wore his colors proudly always to greet others with a "Semper Fi". But most of all he as a loving, devoted husband and father. Dick is survived by daughters, Dolores Carpenter and husband Bob of Laughlin, Nevada and Norma Jean Meehan and husband John of Portland, Maine; his sons, Henry "Butch" Beltran and wife Maggie of Las Vegas, Nevada, Richard "Dick" Littlefield and wife Michelle of Yarmouth, Maine; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Predeceased by wife, Norma; sons, Joey Beltran and Larry Littlefield; daughter, Rebecca Littlefield. A private family graveside service will be held at Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland.
