Obituary

GORHAM – Richard A. "Dick" Boyman , 83, of Gorham, died July 9, 2016 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough after a long illness. Born Feb. 25, 1933 adopted son of James A. & Evelyn G. Boyman. Dick grew up on a farm in Gorham and made Gorham his home for life. He graduated from Gorham High School in 1951 after which he enlisted in the US Navy in June of 1951, and served on the USS Dashiell for four years, including time in Korea during the Korean Conflict. While serving he was awarded The National Defense Service Medal; United Nations Service Medal; Good Conduct Medal; Korean Service Medal (1 Star); Navy Occupation Service Medal. After his discharge he returned to Gorham and started his career with the New England Telephone Co. where he worked thirty-two years retiring from NYNEX, now Verizon in 1987. He married the love of his life Frances Chick on June 15, 1956. They made their home and raised their family in Gorham. In 1968 the Town Of Gorham adopted the Council Manager form of Government. Dick ran and was elected to the first council and continued for ten years serving twice as Chairman. During his time he also was Gorham's representative to the Greater Portland Council Of Government. During his term he served one year as President. In 1973 he was awarded the Neal W. Allen award for outstanding community service by The Greater Portland Chamber of Commerce. That same year he also was awarded the Council of Government Citizen of the Year designation. He also went on to serve on the local Zoning Board of Appeals. Dick was very active in the Gorham Odd Fellows Lodge #98. He served as a Past Grande, Past Chief Patriach of Herrich Encampment of Maine and later Grand Marshall to the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Maine IOOF. He was a member of the Gorham Harmony Lodge No. 38 and also a member of the Portland Lodge of Elks and the American Legion Post No. 60. Dick was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending lots of time at a camp in Washington County with his good friends Todd, Romie, and Russ. He also spent many days at "the camp" on Wilson Pond in Greenville where he and his beloved wife Fran had many good times and many beautiful flowers. He loved to garden and was very generous in sharing the produce with his family, friends and neighbors. He also loved spending time at the family farm on Mighty Street, especially coffee with the Sunday morning crew. He is survived by his wife Frances Chick Boyman; Children Michael (fiancé Carrie Cartwright) - Augusta; Kathleen Smith (Philip) – Liverpool, NY and Brian (Marilyn) of Wahiawa, Hawaii; Grandchildren Joshua and Erinn Smith, James and Katherine Boyman. Sister Sally Beaulieu of CA. Close family friends Raymond & Cheryle Barnes, Gorham. He is predeceased by his adoptive parents James A. and Evelyn G. Boyman. The family would like to thank the Doctors and Nurses at Maine Medical Center as well as the entire staff at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for the compassion and care they provided Dick and his family. At Dick's request, there will be no visiting hours. A private graveside service for family and loved ones will be held at a later date.
