Obituary

Rene P. Drouin, 80, of North Windham, entered into eternal peace and the love of God's care on June 12 surrounded by his family. Rene will be remembered as a versatile athlete during his youth and was awarded "Mr. Westbrook" for his athleticism in 1948.  In his mid-life, he was an avid angler, outdoorsman, and 'jack of all trade'.  Rene always enjoyed spending time with his family and life-long friends, boating on Big Sebago, and just kicking back for some friendly conversation and sparring – especially sparring!  In his later years, he would strike up a conversation with anyone he ran into and as his geography for living became smaller, he looked forward to family gatherings more and more.  Throughout his life, Rene had a strong faith in God and walked quietly in his own spirituality and was covertly charitable to those who needed it.   Mr. Drouin was born in Portland, ME on April 24, 1933, the son of Blanche C. and Gideon A. Drouin, and Rene's passing marks the end of a generation.  He shared 56 years or marriage with his surviving wife, Cecile E. Drouin.  He was the father of John G. Drouin and his wife Mille of Litchfield, NH, Roxanne D. Gagne and her husband David of Raymond, ME, and Paula R. Drouin and her husband Dorsey Mears of York, ME.  Rene was a proud pépère to Courtney M. Rideout and her husband Leon of Cocoa Beach, FL, Nicole E. Gagne of Manchester, NH, Cody S. Stults of Virginia Beach, VA, Christopher D. Gagne of Raymond, ME, Zachary T. Drouin and Phoebe L. Drouin of Litchfield, NH; and great grandfather to Gracie, Landon and Lylah Rideout all of Cocoa Beach, FL. Additional survivors include several loving friends, neighbors, nieces and nephews.   Mr. Drouin graduated from Westbrook High School in 1948 and completed some post-graduate studies while in the military.  He was a Korean War veteran where he served in the Finance Division of the US Army.  Upon his return to civilian life, Rene was employed by S.D. Warren (SAPPI) where he retired nearly 45 years later. Mr. Drouin was known for his volunteer work, he gave countless hours of his time and talent to the communities of the Lakes Region.  As a parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help church for over 40 years, he handled many church suppers, headed up church council, established CYO, and was a Eucharistic Minister.  Rene quietly supported many individuals and organizations, mainly the American Red Cross and The Good Shepard's Food Bank.  He was known as 'Coach' to many Windham Little Leaguers in the 80's as well. Rene will be well remembered by family, friends, former colleagues and acquaintances. Services will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help church in North Windham on Tuesday, June 18 at 10:00am.  On line condolences may be expressed at www.blaisandhayfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Windham Rescue Unit - District 2, 8 School Road, Windham, ME  04062.
