Obituary

Regina Irene Schlehuber, 72, of Standish, ME passed away peacefully at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, ME on August 12th, 2026. She was born on June 4th,1954 in Hartford, Connecticut. She was the youngest of three daughters born to the late William A. Berger and Shirley L. Jewell. Regina grew up in the greater Portland area after her parents relocated to Maine in 1960 when she was just 6 years old. Regina attended Portland Public Schools.

When Regina was just 17 years old, she met the love of her life, Boyd Schlehuber, through her best friend Malee after the family moved to Dibiase Street in Portland, ME. Boyd and Regina were married a little over a year later, just after her 18th birthday on June 10th, 1972.

Regina and Boyd settled in Standish, ME 4 years after they were married where they raised their 3 children, Tara, Jorie and Damon. Regina worked inside the home until her youngest child started school in 1984. Upon entering the workforce for the first time in her life at age 30, she worked a number of different jobs until she found her place in the hotel and hospitality industry. Regina started her career in housekeeping at The Sheridan Tara Hotel in South Portland, ME. She quickly became an incredibly trusted and valued employee. So much so, the owner of the hotel asked that she come and help them with the startup of the new hotel that they were building in the area. She helped them with the room decor and setting up housekeeping before the opening of the hotel. She went on to work for that very hotel in a management position for many years where she was named employee of the month and year several times over.

Outside of work, Regina had many hobbies and interests. She loved spending her summer days at the beach soaking up the sun. She was brilliant at crafting and made beautiful jewelry, ceramics, wreaths, and quilts, among other things. She loved camping and fishing and tending vegetable gardens. She loved animals and cherished every fur baby she had throughout her life.

Regina was a force and if she got it set in her mind to accomplish something, she would stop at nothing to see that it was done. She was unintentionally comical, honest to a fault and a bit of a rebel at times. She was undoubtedly one of a kind and danced to the beat of her own drum all of the days of her life.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 52 years Boyd Dean Schlehuber, her daughter Jorie Lynne Schlehuber, and son Damon Dean Schlehuber.

She is survived by her daughter Tara Schlehuber-Johnson and husband Lance Johnson of Buxton, ME, sister Billie Roy and husband Richard of Portland, ME, sister Karen Howland of Lewiston, ME, 4 grandchildren, Michaela Cost, Hannah Burgess, Isaiah Brisbane and Darius Tatum, and 3 great grandchildren, Leighton Cost, Silas Cost and Elora Burgess as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, caregivers and staff at Stroudwater Lodge, Avita of Stroudwater Memory Care Facility and Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for the love and compassion you showed her while she was in your care. A celebration of life will be held for both Regina and Boyd on Sunday, October 4th at 1:00pm at Meadowland Farm in Buxton. Address and more details to follow in an invite.

One day you will remember me in the haze of an early morning light, in a time before you knew me, when I looked down upon you with the love of a mother’s eyes.

One day you will remember me in the dusk of a day gone by, in a time after you knew me and felt the love of a mother’s eyes.

One day you will remember me in the darkness of a midnight sky, in a time you thought you knew me and searched for the love of a mother’s eyes

One day you will remember me after all of my days gone by, in a time when you knew me well, and looked down upon me still…with the love of a daughter’s eyes.
