Obituary

Rachel Esther (Tedford) Mondor of Westbrook, Maine, passed away peacefully at home with family by her side on February 18, 2026. She was 82 years old.

Rachel was born on September 5, 1943, to Milo Victor Tedford and Clara Mae (Rockwell) Tedford. She grew up as one of seven children in Westbrook, Maine, and lived most of her life right here in the town she loved so much. She attended Westbrook Schools. She was predeceased by her parents; her brothers Lloyd and Frederick Tedford; and her sisters Mary Wallace, Rebecca Shaw, and Shirley Rankin. She is survived by her brother Marshall Tedford.

On December 29, 1967, Rachel married Donald Lucien Mondor. They shared almost 33 beautiful years together before he passed away on December 10, 2000, at the age of 58.

Rachel is survived by her seven children, listed in order of age: Lisa Foster (Gordon), Lorie Mondor, Cynthia Marr, Raymond Mondor (Rebecca), Denise Fortunato (Erik Smith), Donald Mondor, and Anitra Mondor. Twenty-one grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. To her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was known as Nanny. Even though she had a very large family she always seemed to find a way to make each one of them feel special. That was Rachel—completely devoted to her family.

Rachel had a soft spot for animals and loved having them around. She left behind her beloved cat, Kitty, who will be cared for by family.

Rachel was a caregiver her whole life and the rock of the family. On top of being the pillar for her own loved ones, she operated a boarding home for the elderly, treating every resident with genuine kindness and respect. Later, she ran an in-home daycare for many years, pouring the same love and attention into those children as she did her own. She just had that gift. She found her deepest joy in knowing everyone was okay.

She had a deep faith in God that carried her through everything. She found comfort in Ecclesiastes 7:1—“A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth”—and she held onto that promise of something better waiting. The Lord called her Home on Ash Wednesday, which felt so right, echoing Genesis 3:19: “for dust you are and to dust you shall return.”

Rachel’s love was steady and strong, and it never ran out. We miss her so much already, but we know she’s watching over all of us—and we’ll carry the way she made each of us feel special for the rest of our lives. We love you always and forever.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 28, at 12 p.m. at American Legion Post 62, 17 Dunn St, Westbrook, ME 04092.
