Obituary

PORTLAND—Rachel Johnson, 97, went to be with her Saviour on January 20, 2019. Rachel was born on November 30, 1921, in Marshfield, Vermont to Alonzo N. and Florence (Savery) Holt. She attended schools, including Plainfield High School, in Plainfield, Vermont, and graduated from Hepzibah Bible Institute. After graduation she was married on August 15, 1939, to Daniel F. Johnson of Portland, Maine. It was in Portland they raised their three daughters. Rachel was a stay at home mother until her children were grown, after which she was employed in retail sales at Porteous Mitchell & Braun Company. Following her retirement, she volunteered in the Portland Public Schools through the Foster Grandparent Program. Being a caring and compassionate person, she won the love of all who came to know her. She found her joy in life in serving others. She gave of herself, energy, time, and substance to any in need. Often, she would take home-prepared meals to elderly shut-ins. She ministered at various nursing homes over the years. A life-long student of the Bible, she was involved in teaching Bible classes to both adults and children. She loved to play the piano and to sing. She also played the harmonica which she learned from her Dad. She enjoyed poetry, writing some, one for which she received an award. Other interests included both vegetable and flower gardening with her husband. From her flower garden she would arrange bouquets for Sunday church services. Rachel was predeceased by her husband, Daniel "Dan" Johnson; by her four siblings, Harley Holt, Ruth Franks, Clayton Holt, and Grace Ford; and by nine nieces and nephews. Rachel is survived by her three daughters, Florence Glidden and her husband Phillip, Elsie Mae Wood and her husband Clayton, and Ruth Johnson; seven grandchildren, Deborah Glidden, Daniel Glidden, David Glidden and his wife Sarah, Douglass Glidden and his wife Amanda, Rebecca Bishop and her husband Timothy, Linda Demont and her husband Ted, Diana Wood; eleven great grandchildren, Brett Glidden, Jaden Glidden, Kristyn Glidden, Isabelle Glidden, Iain Glidden, Timothy Bishop Jr. and his wife Allicin, Stephen Bishop, Colter Bishop, Ruth Bishop, Clayton Bishop, and Samuel Demont. A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 25, 2019 at 12noon at Forest City Cemetery, South Portland. Arrangements are in the care of the Westbrook Chapel of Dolby Blais & Segee, 35 Church St., Westbrook, ME 04092.
