Obituary

Phillip Scott (Phil) Gurney, of Portland, one week shy of his 63rd birthday, April 28, 1961, passed away at the Gosnell House of Scarborough, on Monday, April 22, 2024. He decided it was time to rest his weary body. Phil was the eldest son born to his proud mother, Betty Jane Gurney (Spiller) of Portland. Phil showed his strength and determination by overcoming many obstacles during his school years. Public Schools were not as advanced with training staff for the specific needs of students like him, as they are today. Phil prevailed and was a very happy member of the 1981 graduating class of Lake Region High School. Phil enjoyed being with his friends, listening to music from the 50's, 60's and 70's. He had a great time going out and singing karaoke with family and friends. He enjoyed all things music, especially singing. Phil had a generous heart and shared what he had with his many friends with him at the Portland Center for Assisted Living. Phil had a sense of humor and was committed to living his life on his terms and recently shared with us that he had a good life. A good life is what we want for the people we love. We love you Phil. Surviving Phil is his mother Betty Gurney (Spiller) from Casco, sister Elizabeth and husband Lenny Cummings and two nieces from Southern Maine, brother Matt and wife Janice Gurney from the West Coast, sister April Pattershall (Gurney), two nephews and one niece from Windham; brother Paul and wife Kandace and nephew from Casco. Also surviving are many cousins, aunts and uncles some to remember and some aunts and uncles to forget. A private graveside service will be held; date to be determined. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Phil, as recommended by the New England Cancer Specialists - Scarborough, please send donations to the Foundation4Love, 5 Clarks Hill Lane, Saco, ME 04072.
