Philip was born in Westbrook, Maine on Easter Sunday April 12, 1925, son of Joseph Mailhot and Alice St. Pierre Mailhot. He attended St. Hyacinth Parochial School and Westbrook High School, graduating in 1943. Shortly after graduating, he joined the Maritime Service, being stationed at Sheepshead Bay, NY during World War II where he worked as a Chaplain's Assistant. In the late 1940's during the Korean Conflict, he joined the Army's 101st Airborne at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, for Stateside Service where. Being the only member of his Platoon who could type, he served as Battery Clerk which he served as for the rest of his Tour of Duty, then was transferred to Camp Breckenridge, near Louisville, Kentucky being Honorably Discharged in 1950. On one of his Leaves, he heard of a job in Batavia, NY at the local Radio Station WBTA. After travelling there and the job did not materialize, he met his future wife, Jeanette "Janie" Smith. They began corresponding after his returning to finish his Service Duty and returned to Batavia where they Courted and were married at St. Joseph's Church on June 17, 1950. It would be a marriage lasting 2 months shy of 60 years until his wife Janie, passed away in April 2010. Philip worked a variety of jobs in Batavia, where he also began preparing Income Taxes. Longing to return to Westbrook, they packed and moved back to Westbrook, arriving in 1954. Initially he worked at Hansen Blueberry Farm in Gray, Maine, working in the office in the morning and working the fields in the afternoon. He was then offered a position at the Kiekhaefer-Eddie Plant in Westbrook, which was later sold to Weyerhaeuser, where he became Office Manager and New England Sales Manager. Janie, who suffered from Epilepsy, experienced her condition worsening and Philip left the road and returned to Westbrook. Janie went through an 11-hour brain operation at Montreal Neuro at McGill University in March of 1964 which helped stabilize her condition for many years. In January of 1965, he began his own Accounting Office on Main Street, which he owned and operated for 20 years before retiring from monthly accounting work and selling the business to another local accounting firm. However, he continued his Income Tax Practice until he retired from preparing returns in 2012, after 58 seasons of Tax Prep. Philip developed a very large Tax Practice over the years, up to 500 Clients between January and April every year, including second and third generation family members. Janie helped him in the Office with the regular work and then every tax season until her passing and then son Marc took over to help him finish. His Son Marc was born in April of 1951 in Batavia, NY and his Daughter Mary Renee Ann Mailhot, in December of 1956 in Portland, Maine. Along with his accounting and tax prep, he was also actively involved in local and state politics. During the 1950, under the Currier Administration, he was only 1 of 2 Democrats on the City Council. In 1959, he was almost appointed to a position in the Clauson Administration, but the Governor died in office first. In 1960, he became Chairman of the Democratic City Committee. Only July 1, 1963, with his son Marc by his side, he was sworn in by then Governor John H, Reed as Chairman of the Board of Registration in Westbrook, a post he held almost 10 years. In 1964 he was Senator Edmund Muskie's Campaign Manager in Westbrook, where Senator Muskie and his wife Jane, were guests in the Mailhot home for a campaign lunch. The same evening Senator Ed (as Marc called him), Philip and Son Marc, rode in a motorcade in the same car, through Westbrook on the way to a Fundraising Dinner at Westbrook High School. Senator Muskie was re-elected by a wide margin in the 1964 Election. Philip continued active, working in Westbrook Polling places well into his 80's to continue to contribute skills and acquired knowledge in local politics. He also served as a Member of the Downtown Westbrook Revitalization Committee in 1993. Philip was also a very talented Musician in his own right. Beginning in his 20's he began entertaining audiences with his jokes and singing. As a member of St. Hyacinth Parish, he performed in a number of their Variety Shows in the 1960's. In 1967 he Directed the play Arsenic and Old Lace which was wonderfully received. In March 1968, he agreed to become Manager of his son's group, Love, Inc. Maine's most Popular and Successful Band, 1968-1971, and under his Management, they became the 1st Band in Maine to record a full LP and Chart 3 Singles, in 1969, 1970 and 1971. During his later years, he and his wife would perform at local Nursing and Retirement Homes until Janie passed. His son Marc also continued his musical career, beginning in 1960, and when he began his Solo Performances, Philip would be the "Star" and Marc's Special Guest, joking with and leading the audiences with sing-a-alongs. His last performance was a Christmas Show on Facebook in December 2020 at the end of Marc's special on-line show. As mentioned, he as a Member of St. Hyacinth Parish, preparing their books and Financial Statements, and Income Taxes and served as a Chief Usher at the 4:15 Masses on Saturday afternoons during the 1970's. He and Janie also served on the 1st School Committee and used personal funds along with the other parents to buy books for the School Library. In the late 1990's and early 2000's he was President of the Westbrook Senior Citizens and around the same time Philip and Jane were Grand Marshalls of the Westbrook Together Day Parade which had to be postponed to one year later due to a heavy rainstorm. Philip and Jane liked to travel Overseas especially to England to see their longtime friends Ronnie and Joyce Kirkland. They each took turns going across the Atlantic every 3 years until the 2000s when Joyce came over alone for Shannon's Wedding. On their first trip overseas in 1973 their daughter Renee accompanied them, visiting their friends in England as well as travelling to Belgium and France. Philip and Renee really enjoyed sports, especially the Red Sox and Patriots. Renee went to her 1st Red Sox game at Fenway Park with him in 1969 and as a Graduation Present again in 1975. He also enjoyed spending time with all his Great-Grandchildren, Mackenzie, Abbe, Noah, Keagan, Landon and Reese going to Birthday parties and games and spending time with them over the Holidays. Late in his life after Janie died, he and Jan Boucher of Windham became dear friends and remained so up until the end of his life.
