Obituary

Phil Jaques, 96, of Westbrook, passed away peacefully on July 8, after a short illness. He was with family at the time of his passing. Philip was born in Portland on April 4, 1928. An only child, he was raised by his mother, Doris Clothey. Phil and his mother lived in Westbrook for a time and later moved to Portland, where he graduated from Deering High School. He loved reminding people that he and our Mom went to rival high schools. After graduating from High School Dad moved to Westbrook with his mother and stepfather John Clothey. As a young man, both Phil and his mother worked at Haven's Candy Kitchen. Later, while still in High School he became part of the groundskeeping crew for the Payson Estate in Falmouth. As a young man, he began attending church at the Advent Christian Church, formerly of Park Avenue in Portland. This is where he met his wife Marietta of 64 years and where they raised their family together. Dad showed his faith by example. He and Mom put on countless church suppers, and Dad spent many hours ensuring the church was spotlessly clean for Sunday services. Each of us remember our task of ensuring the bibles and hymnals aligned perfectly from the front of the church to the back. Soon after marrying, mom and dad moved to the Prides Corner area of Westbrook. Dad remained in the home they built there. Mom and Dad joined various Square Dancing clubs and enjoyed traveling to various Square Dancing Conventions. As a family, a favorite activity was camping at campgrounds in Maine and New Hampshire. Dad shared a love of car racing with his son Peter, daughter in law Gail and grandson Jonathan. They attended many races together over decades and often had great stories to tell. Phil worked for 30 plus years at St Johnsbury Trucking Company. He became quite bored after just a few months of retirement and returned to work at Rowe Ford where he worked as a swap car driver and eventually in the parts department retiring at 94 after 25 years of service. Family was foremost in Phil's life. His every thought and action was about them and their well being. He was giving thoughtful advice just last week. Dad enjoyed participating in his children's various school activities and through adulthood has taken great interest in them and loved being with them and visiting with their friends. One of his greatest joys was the birth of their grandson Jonathan. Since birth, and throughout school Dad played an important role in his care. Phil is survived by his children Linda, Becki, Peter and his wife Gail (aka "my favorite daughter in law Gailzy) grandson Jonathan, and sister-in-law Llewella. He was pre-deceased by his mother Doris and wife Marietta. A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 13 at 10:00 AM at Brooklawn Memorial Park. Reception following graveside service at Highland Lake Grange, 87 Hardy Rd, Westbrook. In lieu of flowers, it would be meaningful to Dad for donations to be made to the Veteran's "Cabin in the Woods" program in Togus. Donations can be made through Volunteers of America ear marked for "Cabins in the Woods (www.voanne.org, click "donate tab" and dedicate" this donation. Or, because Gosnell Hospice House brought comfort to both Mom and Dad and our family, donations in his memory can be made to Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, 11 Hunnewell Drive, Scarborough, Maine. Arrangements are in the care of the Windham Chapel of Dolby Blais & Segee, 434 River Rd., Windham, Maine.
