WESTBROOK- Philip R. Afthim, 73, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes at his home on August 15, 2018. He was born on March 4, 1945, a son of William and Margaret (Peneau) Afthim. Philip attended Westbrook schools and enlisted in the United States Army after High School. He was a combat veteran and expert rifleman during Vietnam, proudly serving his country for five years. Upon his return home from the military, Philip began working at Forest City Chevrolet as a mechanic. He then took over ownership of the cleaning company he worked for and named it Mister Handy's Cleaning Service which he ran with his wife of 19 years, Linda (Rackliffe) Afthim. His oldest son, Phil Jr. spent a lot of hours in his youth assisting his father at several of their cleaning accounts. An excellent bowler, Philip also purchased Beacon Lanes in Raymond. Together, Philip and Linda owned and operated the two businesses, and worked hard to provide for their children. He was a very hardworking man and anyone that knew him would say that he was "set in his ways." Family was an important part of Philip's life, he loved that all of his children shared his same initials, "P.R.A." a nomenclature tradition that has been passed down through the family generations. The Christmas season was one of his favorite pastimes; he spoiled his kids and was infamous for a present or two for himself behind the tree. An avid pool player, Philip also hosted an underground pool hall in the basement of his home, naming it "P.A.'s Pool Hall" in his signature spray paint signs. He also believed that everything should be put back in it's place and painted his 5 kids names on their cinder block wall for their bikes and painted "5 is enough" on the ends of the wall. Philip will be remembered as a family man with a cold Budweiser in one hand and a smoke in the other. He is survived by his children, Philip Afthim and his wife Shelly, Paul Afthim and his fiancée Tina Costanza, Pamela Wing and her husband Robert, Patricia Afthim, and Patrick Afthim; grandchildren, Bryce and Brady Afthim, Andrew and Alex "Bob" Wing, Julia Afthim, and Phoebe, Phinlee, and Phia Afthim; siblings, Michael Afhim, Arthur Afthim, Lorraine Afthim, Elaine LaBrie, Joan Jackson, and Constance Dwyer. A private family burial will be held at a later date.
