Gorham, ME Paul Gonya, 92, of Gorham, passed away on December 28, 2018 at Gorham House as a result of a brain tumor. Born on July 30, 1926 in Millinocket, he was the son of Aldolph and Gertrude Donnelly Gonya. He graduated from Sterns High School in 1943 and joined the Navy in 1944. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II on the USS Ranger and the USS Nitro. After his discharge in 1946, he graduated from Coburn Classical Institute in Waterville, then attended the University of Maine. In 1950, Paul married Ruth Morrison Gonya of Millinocket. They were married for 58 years prior to her death in 2008. Paul worked in Millinocket for the First National Store and the J.C. Smart IGA Store. In 1956 he was hired by Milliken Tomlinson Company, a food distributer, to work as a meat supervisor in the Presque Isle division. In 1968 he was transferred to the Portland office, where he was promoted to director of the meat department, retiring in 1988 after 32 years with the Company. Paul resided in Gorham for the past 50 years. He enjoyed playing golf, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. He was a former member of the Gorham Country Club. Paul is survived by his two daughters, Paula Gonya and Susan O'Brien and her husband Randy of Gorham, his son Paul, Jr. and his partner Wayne Whitney of Clearwater, FL. Fondly called Bumpa by his four granddaughters, Erin, Caitlin, Megan and Shannon O'Brien, all of Gorham, and his five great-grandchildren, Madison, Jack, Emily, Travis and Paige. Other surviving family members are his sister-in-law Joyce Kovalcik, brothers-in-law Harry Morrison and wife Tina, Frank Morrison and wife Joyce and Gary Morrison and wife Billee, his nephew Robert Gonya Jr. and nieces Judy Leet and her husband Bob of Millinocket, Margaret Kidd of Gainesville, VA and many other extended nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his sister Mary Elizabeth Hatfield and his brother Robert Gonya. The family would like to thank the staff of Windsor I at Gorham House and the Compassus Hospice team for their kind and supportive care. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00AM Monday January 7, at St. Anne's Catholic Church, 299 Main St., Gorham. Burial will take place at the Maine Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Augusta at a later date.
