Obituary

Westbrook- Patrick James Peoples, 84, passed away on December 6, 2017 in Portland. He was born in London, England on August 27, 1933 to Columba and Elizabeth (McDaid) Peoples. Patrick grew up in Wimbledon, England and also lived in Ireland for a couple of years during WWII to escape the bombing of London by the Germans, also known as the Blitz. Patrick attended London University and obtained his Physics degree before spending two years in the RAF, which included being stationed in Germany. Patrick and his first wife Patricia immigrated to Boston in 1961, when British scientists were recruited by US companies to work in the US. Patrick worked at a few companies along Route 128 in Boston, including Honeywell Patrick and Patricia had three children Briana, Terry and Gavin and moved to Intervale, NH in part to feed his passion for skiing. After their divorce, Patrick moved to Bridgton, ME where he worked at Howell Laboratories for about five years. In 1979, Patrick began working in the Research Department at S.D. Warren Company in Westbrook. Patrick met his future wife Ann, who also worked at S.D. Warren and the two were married in 1981. Patrick and Ann lived in Westbrook, where Ann still resides, and were married for over 35 years. After the last of their children left home, both Patrick and Ann became involved in volunteerism and serving the community of Westbrook. Patrick and Ann purchased a second home on Tucker Ridge Road in Springfield, ME, affectionately known as 'Tucker Ridge' and they both enjoyed it immensely. They welcomed family and friends to come and enjoy the solitude and natural beauty at Tucker Ridge. There were many nights that Patrick would setup his telescopes to gaze into the universe. Since light pollution was virtually non-existent at Tucker Ridge, the star gazing was spectacular. On a number of occasions, Patrick would wake his grandchildren in the middle of the night to experience the beauty of the night sky. After Patrick retired from S.D. Warren (Sappi), he became a substitute teacher in the Westbrook School system and then worked at the University of Southern Maine for 13 years teaching Physics. Patrick absolutely loved teaching and giving presentations at the USM Planetarium. His favorite presentation at the Planetarium was on Stonehenge in England, where he had visited a number of times as a boy and young man. Patrick was a very social and inclusive man. He always gave everyone the benefit of the doubt and would lend a helping hand where needed. If you have had the pleasure of engaging in a conversation with Patrick, then you know what a great loss his family has been dealt. Patrick is predeceased by his parents and brother John Peoples. He is survived by his wife Ann E.
