Obituary

Patricia A. Brann, 79 - GORHAM Patricia "Patty" Brann of Gorham, Maine, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 27, 2018. Patty was with her family and under the wonderful care of the staff at Mercy Hospital in Portland, Maine. Patty was born in Portland, Maine in April of 1939 to Violet Mae Hatt and William Hatt. She was raised in Gorham by her mother and her treasured adopted father, Henry Wiggin, along with her beloved sisters, Gloria and Sharon. From a young age Patty was a very social girl. She loved to be involved in her school, community and family. That trait never left her. When she was young she was a Campfire Girl. She sang in chorus and acted in school plays. She played on her school's basketball team and worked in her mother's nursery, Sunny Acres. As an adult Patty took part in everything from Church gatherings and community choruses, to craft fairs and garden clubs. She was also incredibly involved in her children's schooling and volunteered to help whenever possible. Patty loved people, and she loved her town, and they loved her back. After graduating from Gorham High School in 1957, Patty married her lifelong sweetheart, Walton Brann in the summer of 1958. Together they raised their two children, Elizabeth "Betty" and Walter "Skip", while traveling up and down the East Coast during Walton's active Marine service. In 1966 Patty was thrilled to return to her hometown of Gorham. She and Walton stayed in Gorham until 1991 when they moved to Spotswood, New Jersey, and later Gorham, New Hampshire. Patty and Walton returned home to Gorham in 2001. Patty touched so many lives. She was born to be a grandmother and she realized that dream more than three times in her life. Patty's grandchildren, much like everyone in Patty's world, were spoiled by her love. Patty knew every trick to perfecting a childhood and made certain her grandchildren never missed out on anything. No grandchild ever left her home without a souvenir, a knitted article of clothing, or with an empty stomach. And everyone always had cookies for the road. Patty worked hard to make sure that her children and her grandchildren, her husband and their family, and all of her friends, felt her love even her absence. The truest testament to Patty's love and generosity was her knitting. Patty knit for all of her family and friends, as well as her church and community. One would be hard pressed to find someone in Patty's life that does not have one of her hand-knitted afghans in their home. Her kindness and generosity is truly unmatched. Patty's passing is preceded by her mother and fathers, her sister, Gloria Powers, her son-in-law, Howard Downs, her sister-in-law, Viola "Mimi" Brann, her brothers-in-law, Mark Brann, Bernie Powers, Don Perkins, and Carl Wallace, and her longtime friend Walter Skiba. She is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years, Walton Brann and their Poodle, Mitzy of Gorham; her children, Elizabeth Downs of West Gardiner, and Walter and Linda Brann of Gorham; her grandchildren, Victoria Horton of Portland, Patricia "Mary" Downs of Portland, Sarah Brann of Gorham, and William Brann of Gorham; her sister, Sharon Perkins of Ocean Springs, Miss., her sisters and brothers-in-law, Flora "Dee" Wallace, Rosie Brann, Freddie Brann, Avard "Hoot" and Barbara Brann, and Anna Brann; her uncle, Arthur Hatt; her best friend Sadie Skiba; several nieces and nephews, a plethora of cousins, and the community of Gorham Maine. All of whom she loved dearly. Patty's funeral service will be held in her lifelong church, First Parish Congregational Church, 1 School St. Gorham, at 11am on Saturday, November 17, 2018. Patty's nephew, Rev. Paul Perkins will be officiating the service. Interment will follow at Eastern Cemetery in Gorham. A reception for all who loved Patty will be held in the church immediately following. All are welcome. Arrangements are under the care of the Gorham Chapel of Dolby, Blais & Segee, 76 State St.
