OLD ORCHARD BEACH – Norman Dyer, 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at a Portland hospital. He was born on August 15, 1931 in Westbrook, the son of Harold and Emily (Conohan) Dyer. Norman enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in the 1950's and served as a military policeman stationed in Yorktown, VA. As part of his duties, he cared for a stable of riding horses and would patrol on horseback. He later served in the infantry with the 1st Marine Division during the Korean War. He was proud of his service in Korea and for many years he attended reunions with the 1st Marine Division. He worked at the Scott Paper S.D. Warren mill for most of his adult life. He retired as a foreman in the finishing department supervising people running trimmers. He also led tours of the mill. Norman will be missed by his loving family and friends, especially his neighbors. He would often drive sick or elderly neighbors to appointments, and for as long as he was able he would shovel snow and rake leaves for them. It was common to see him helping to move a neighbors' trash cans on pick-up day, even when he needed a cane to get around himself. In addition to his parents, Norman was pre-deceased by his siblings, Alice LaBrecque, Russell Dyer, Kenneth Dyer, Harold "Dick" Dyer, and Robert Dyer; and son-in-law, Arthur "Butch" Gaudette. He is survived by his children, Brian Dyer and his wife, Shelbie of Buxton, Sharon Gaudette of Westbrook, Richard Dyer of Buxton, Theresa Bakker and husband, Scott of Sebago Lake, and Christopher Dyer and his wife, Laurel of Scarborough; grandchildren, Timothy Dyer, Laura Dyer, Ross Dyer, Briana Gaudette, Danielle Gaudette, and Matthew Dyer; as well as four great-grandchildren. Public visitation will be held from 5 pm to 7 pm on Friday, October 23, 2020 at the Westbrook Chapel of Dolby, Blais & Segee, 35 Church Street, Westbrook.
