Obituary

Windham – Norman P. Cressey, 83, died on July 31, 2016, surrounded by his family. He was born in Portland, on November 8, 1932, the son of Garold Thomas and Helen Irene (Pratt) Cressey. Norman attended Deering High School and became a truck driver working for companies Fogg, Boston and Maine, Fox and Ginn and retiring from New Penn. A member of the Teamsters Union since 1952 after he retired he held the position of Warden for Local Union 340. A member of the Freemasons Triangle Lodge No.1 he attained the level of Master Mason in 1959 and was an active Shriner always handing out circus tickets. He was also a member of the Portland Lodge #188 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. An avid golfer since he was a caddy as a child in Portland at Riverside Golf Course in Portland. After he retired he found a new career as a jack-of-all trades at Riverside. He continued working there until two months before his death. When not in Windham, Norman could be found at his beloved hunting camp in Troy. He took great pride in the fact that he built his home in Windham with his own hands with the assistance of his father, who was a master electrician, and other family members. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, and his love for his children and grandchildren which showed through in his generosity and kindness. He could always be spotted at either Cole Farms or Chutes handing out mints to the wait staff. Norman is survived by his wife of 43 years, Claire (Fecteau) Cressey; children, Daniel Cressey, Judith Cressey, Sally Bannen and husband Tom, and John Cressey and wife Nicole; grandchildren, Madelyn, Madison, and Gavan; brother, Wesley Cressey and wife Betty Ann; sister-in-law, Marjorie Cressey; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Norman is predeceased by his first wife, Ann S. (Rollins) Cressey; brother, Lawrence Cressey; and sisters Dolores Cressey, Elaine Tasker, and Lucille Daniel. Visitation will be held from 6-8pm with a Masonic service at 7:45pm on Wednesday, August 3, at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham. A funeral will be held at 10am on Thursday, August 4, at the Chapel. Burial will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations are requested to be sent to either Shriners Hospitals for Children or VNA Home Health Hospice.
