Nicholas J. Sangillo, 90 of Portland, passed away at Mercy Hospital on December 7, 2014, Pearl Harbor Day. He was born in Portland on May 19, 1924, the last of 26 children. He was the son of Frank & Catherine Sangillo. He was a WWII Veteran that stormed the Beaches of Normandy on D-Day. He has 4 Purple Hearts and the French Legion of Honor Medal, which is France's oldest and highest honor. He was a lifetime member of the Order of Purple Heart, DAV, VFW post and Amvets. He was also a communicant of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society. Nicholas is survived by "The love of his life" his wife Karen Irving, their daughter Marisa Irving, also, two sons Mark Sangillo of Scarborough and Nicholas Sangillo of Wolfeboro, NH, and a daughter Amy Remy of Belingham, MA. A mass will be said on Friday Dec 12, 2014 at 10am at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 72 Federal St. Portland. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
